Good grief,
In the food section of this thread, some of our leftie correspondents seem to be bending over backwards in their efforts to discredit some pretty reasonable views put forward by those whose views they disagree with.
Oh come on, where is all that tolerance and reasonableness in those blood red beating hearts of yours?

It's not about being "leftie", it's about caring for your fellow man, understanding that not everyone who is struggling is doing so because they can't cook, or blow all their money on fags, takeaway, drugs and booze or is a feckless lazy good for nothing.

Some people, through no fault of their own, are struggling badly at the moment.

It is within the government's power to assist the most vulnerable, but won't, instead it's down to the war in Ukraine, market forces at play, we're all in this together, world wide inflation, etc., etc.

Imagine your response to poor people living in this country being “well they need to find ways to be less hungry” rather than looking for ways to actually help them. I know the right wing mindset is conditioned to avoid helping those seen as somehow lesser than you but **** me…

It isn't very reasonable though. It may well be that a number of poor people can't cook from scratch but that applies to a number of wealthy people too.

It's a bit of leap to suggest that one of the reasons you are poor because you can't cook.

It also isn't long before someone suggests making soup from a chicken carcass, batch cooking etc.. without really thinking that some people may not have access to a large freezer.

Lastly if you look at the sort of food available in food banks, it isn't ready meals or frozen chips, or something you can just throw in a microwave.

I've donated to them locally under a system where they tell you what they need, not the ones in supermarkets where you just donate what you want.

It's CLEAR they are after dried goods that require cooking (beans, rice, pulses) and most importantly the sort of protein that doesn't require refrigeration. They are ALWAYS after tinned meat.

Reasonable views as in ‘Sorry you haven’t got enough money, but you’re not trying hard enough’

That’s not reasonable, it’s I’m alright Jack, so you should be.

Seriously, volunteer at a food bank for a couple of weeks and then come back and call us lefties.
Btw, I am a centrist, but the right wing has moved so far to the right, anything centrist is now a lefty!

It’s weird how people suddenly lost the ability to cook for themselves in about 2010, isn’t it?

But you said they're spending £5k per year of energy. Whatever they may be dying of, it isn't hypothermia.

Btw, there’s a lovely bloke in Burnley, called James Anderson, who runs a heating firm Depher. He helps those who are very poor. He has supplied new boilers to old people when theirs were condemned. His work is now quite famous especially when the lovely Hugh Grant donated £10K to it.

Edit to add, there’s a reason it is called grinding poverty, because it grinds you down. It’s ok trying to cope for a few weeks or a month or two, but when appliances break or kids grow out of clothes, there’s no extra for them.

Most of us reasonable human beings care about our fellow men and I don’t believe that many /any of the correspondents on this thread have suggested ‘that everyone who is struggling is doing so because they can’t cook, or blow all their money on fags, takeaways, drugs and booze or is a feckless lazy good for nothing.’
Of course some people are struggling through no fault of their own, but there seems to be a volley of shots from some on here towards anybody who suggests ways in which some of those strugglers may be able to help themselves.
The question of what the Government should or should not be doing to help the most vulnerable is another topic slightly different to the cookery theme.
It is a pity that every subject tends to become so tribal as it makes sensible discussion rather difficult and none of us is entirely immune from this affliction.

The problem is this conversation was only generated because a Tory MP made the suggestion he did.

Its not tribalism its humanitarianism.

so we've established that in place of food banks, those facing hardship should be provided ready made meals, presumably delivered, and its about time government provided this. unless i've mis-understood something?
bizarre how suggestion of home cooking should be turned into a partisan political argument. because a Tory MP made a cackhanded comment, so assumed anyone making related suggestions must be politically aligned. i'd have thought everyone would agree we should all have enough food and that everyone would benefit from being able to cook. turns out as this is not 100% inclusive for everyone, its rejected. i have no idea what the real solution is, its certainly not solve how this debate has gone.

There have been some reasonable views put forward re cooking, but some on here will not tolerate views they don’t agree with.
I consider myself centre right and am no fan of Johnson or many of the incompetents in the Government, as I have stated on this forum a number of times. However, whilst you may consider yourself a centrist, there are those whose tribalism prevents any views that digress from their own to be considered reasonable. This immediately makes any discussion very difficult.

A cackhanded comment from a nasty piece of work. It was deliberate to stir up trouble and deflect from other things going on, such as Johnson not providing the security of appointing Lebedev, two weeks overdue, which is contempt of Parliament amongst other things.
Talking of which, Lebedev could lose his seat in the HOL for not turning up, and has anybody seen Carrie lately?

Dead cats, always look around.

It’s lack of understanding that cooking tips don’t help those who cannot afford to buy the ingredients. There have been a few in this thread who don’t believe anyone could possibly be in that situation so, some of us have spoken from their experience that there are many who are.
Blaming the poor for being poor is not helpful.

As Beorthelm posted, it was a cack handed quote, but it has been jumped on by those who wish to see no use or good in anything suggested on here by those whose political views do not correspond with their own.
That is the tribalism I refer to and I see nothing in suggesting ways in which those who are struggling may help themselves as not being humanitarian.

I see the cooking skills debate is still ongoing so I will offer one of our traditional family recipes when I was growing up in order to help those who are struggling.

SPO
Cut 4 sausages into pieces
Cut up one pound of potatoes and 2 onions into pieces (preferably bought after they've been knocked down)
Packet of red lentils

Put it all in a pot, a shilling in the meter and simmer until lentils have broken down and potatoes are cooked (approx 20 mins of power on single ring). Feeds 1 adult and 3 kids for 2 days, 3 days if you bulk it out with bread. I speak from experience but appreciate there were some far worse off than ourselves.

If you're feeling flush add half a stock cube, or maybe some stock from a chicken carcass. Talking of which I boiled a chicken carcass Monday (old habits die hard) which offered up 400ml of stock which disappeared into a risotto for 2 the next day. But I guess that serves me right as it was a supermarket chicken and I should have bought an organic, free range, corn fed chicken if I wanted to produce enough for soup for a week

It brings a tear to your eye, the way society is going back 50 odd years ???

*edit*
And I forgot, for those special occasions, make it 2 course with half a swiss roll and a pint of milk split four ways

Wow! You think that Tories are out of touch? Listen to yourself man. If you are struggling to make ends meet you do what is necessary, not buy overpriced, low nutrition ready meals or Maccy Ds. Or maybe they should head down to one of your overpriced eateries and beg for some scraps? Pompous and entitled does not come close.

Yawn. I see others have responded to you’re cretinous post, I leave this here.
