Whist chancellor of exchequer, Sunak was asked repeatedly to release funds for the repair of these schools and he repeatedly refused.

A lot of the blame lies once again, at his feet.

It’s also juts breaking on the BBC that Sunak halved school repairs budget in 2021.

I genuinely think this latest confidence trick by the Tory party could seal their fate.

Parents, of which there are many in the U.K. do tend to like a level of confidence that the classroom isn’t going to collapse and kill their child when they send them off to school. Sorry, drop them off to school in their Chelsea Tractors.

probably whoever is responsible for maintenance and management of the estate. obvious to blame politicans, just interesting there are many different politicans involved in this matter. they all got it wrong. much is said about budgets, seems to me it's more a prioritisation issue.

Schools are woefully under funded. In my profession there is an uptake in ‘incidents’ within schools and the reason is under funding / lack of suitable measures in place

Simple example from my son's old Academy. They are judged by their board almost exclusively on GCSE results. Challenging one paper to get a grade higher where students have been within 1-3 marks of the higher grade costs £400 per paper. If they get ten marginal papers a summer that's four bags a year just on ten pupils. Safe buildings? Pah. No league table for them....

When teachers wanted a pay rise, they were offered a pay rise, but half of the money for it, was to come out of the existing education budget, meaning repairs wouldn't be done.

Many different politicians but Michael Gove's move in 2010 has to be one of the biggest culprits.

I bet Eton isn't at any imminent risk of falling down on those kids' heads

Sunak in huge trouble here.

Tories have been looking for an excuse to plunge the knife and install a true believer

Sunak will need a good conference to last the year in my opinion

Hunt saying they will do whatever it takes and spend whatever it costs to fix schools.

Too late. You had the chance to do all that and you declined.

Plus, you caused the crisis. So don’t get all hero on us now, as if you’re here to save the day. You caused this crisis by failing to live up to your responsibilities for over a decade.

Good article here about a struggling headmaster trying to run a school in Oldham....

The UK government is failing more and more of it's citizens day by day. Then, when Labour or whoever take over next year and are saddled with the responsibility of fixing this mess, the Conservacunts will just bray from the sidelines about what a shit job they're doing.

He also spent the weekend saying "no money for it", so clearly seeing the backlash has decided actually they do have to do something about it

a story about a 20yo school with dilapidation, repair budget being repurposed to other areas, trying to adress wider social issues, tells us a complex story.
