Well, although I would have preferred Sunak, once the predictable ya-booing has quietened down a teensy bit, let us listen to her plans for helping the populace and business through ‘ the cost of living crisis’, before everyone thinks Armageddon is upon us.
The jury will be out.

I have some sympathy with that. I will be interested to see who is in the senior cabinet jobs after the next few days, and what she might announce.

I am not, however, holding out a great deal of hope. Simply put, I have zero hope that she will be any good, but would be happy to be proved wrong.

I just watched her acceptance speech. She's awful, isn't she?

The bit where she mentioned Sunak and claimed that the leadership campaign 'displayed the breadth of talent in the Conservative party' made me laugh.

Yes Liz, it sure does...

This is like a new 20 million pound striker signing on deadline day. Very exciting. Mrs Truss will be unveiled as our new leader shortly.

Congratulations Liz.

That's the funniest thing I've read all day. The only thing she's lokely to score is own goals.

Do you really think any of the sensible conservatives who haven't left the party and wouldn't serve under Johnson will now serve under Truss ?

I'm afraid we will still have the same scrapings of the barrel in Cabinet. Not so much shuffling deckchairs on the Titanic, more like shuffling the remaining turds in the cat litter

Bit disappointing she didn't pay Rishi Sunak any real and respectful compliments for a fair and well contested leadership race. Although you could see the relief on Rishi's face in his generous applause for her. He has dodged a bullet, while retaining his dignity. This has disaster written all over it now.

An unfaithful, eccentric slapper running the country.

I did use the expression "zero hope". I did say "not holding out a great deal of hope". I am just not condemning her before she has actually done anything. I would prefer to wait until she has actually done something concrete.

I have not paid great attention to the hustings and the election process, preferring to do something useful or enjoyably instead. The snippets I have heard, like saying some dozy right wing TV channel at least tells the truth, unlike the BBC, are more than enough to put me off, but........

I bet the help includes free pork chops for everyone - shame we can't afford to cook them.

That's because you are a hard leftist. It's like going on the Palace forum after we beat them looking for praise.
She could have have given a speech like Churchill and you will still find fault.

Just like Brighton this country is blue 👌🤣

Hmm. Question. Is anyone who doesn't like the government and is of the opinion that Truss is unlikely to be an effective Prime Minister a hard leftist?

I am no Conservative but trying to view the appointment of Liz Truss in as a positive light as I can;

1. She’s not Boris Johnson
2. She was foreign secretary and managed to finally secure the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliff when no former foreign secretary did including Boris Johnson
3. She hasn’t always been a Tory and her parents were Labour voters hopefully will have had some positives she’s been hiding for this very moment
4. She’s not Boris Johnson and as such is not beholding to the ERG for her position so hopefully she has more flexibility
5. She has no new mandate to be PM and hopefully will need to go to the polls
6. I cannot hate her or what she stands for until I hear what it is but at least she’s not Boris Johnson and that’s a start

But she didn't though, did she? She stumbled, paused for applause in the wrong places and looked like she had zero confidence or conviction. I'm far from a 'hard leftist' (whatever that is), but they are not the attributes of a leader when making a speech.

And that's without getting into the actual content. "We will deliver, we will deliver, we will deliver"? Dreadful. She sounded so out of touch with the majority of the population, just desperate to please the people in the room and 'deliver' on what was promised THREE YEARS AGO!

Shambles.

In true British democratic tradition she fails to get a majority of the Tory member electorate to vote for her, yet still get the Prime Minister gig.

81,000 vote for her, 91,000 don't. And this is her own party.

Privately, I bet she's upset she couldn't get an additional 6,000 votes to give her an absolute majority of party members. 30,000 not voting can only be construed as a rejection of both candidates, otherwise why be a member of the party if you can't even be bothered to vote for the next leader who will also be your Prime Minister?

I can't wait for PMQs. Boris was adept at deflecting Starmer's attacks - the bloke has been defending his bad behaviour his whole life so was an expert - but even then the drip-drip effect of this sapped his credibility. Truss doesn't have the charm, the wit or the sheer brass neck to do the same and she will be battered.

Still maybe the public might give her a chance?

Oh.

I know it's only a poll and a small sample, but what's interesting about that is that those that depart the Tories as a result of what's now been confirmed go straight to Labour.

imo goes either way. she'll be more attentive and deal with matters, take some responsibility. on the other hand that may mean deliberatly adopting policies thats are unhelpful.
