Sir Graham Brady has told Tory MPs that there will be a vote of no confidence in Boris Johnson, the BBC’s Chris Mason reports. It will take place this evening, between 6pm and 8pm.

He'll have engineered the best time for this to happen. He knew it was coming, he'll breeze through it I suspect.

One thinks of the Heseltine challenge to Thatcher in 1990. She got 54.8% of the first ballot vote, in thise days not quite enough to avoid a second ballot. She ended up being persuaded to resign.

By my maths a similar outcome this time would translate to Boris winning 197-163. However, he'd see that as vindication and cling on to power.

I have a gut feeling the 54 votes were in on Tuesday.

My late Father in Law was Chair of Horsham District Council (Lib Dem) and my Brother and his wife were (Labour) Councillors in Bury.

I suspect my opinions of the dirty games that go on are from personal knowledge rather than the FT.

Sir Graham Brady is speaking to reporters now.

He confirms what was in the statement he sent out earlier.

He says the result will be announced “shortly” after the ballot closes at 8pm.

Arrangements will be in place for Tory MPs needing proxy votes.

He says he told Boris Johnson yesterday that the threshold had been reached. They agreed the vote should take place as soon as possible.

He refuses to say how many letters he received.

All we know is that it was at least 54, but it could be significantly more.

The Sun pointed out how they’ll be a leadership election every 3 months if their Boris faced a vote of no confidence.

I’d question their logic and yours. Boris is safe for a year if he wins, not a couple of months. If you think he’d resign, you’re obviously a lot madder than many on NSC would suspect. How else will he be gone?
