Tory government yet again panders to bonkers, right wing, reactionary loons.

So the genius government decides to force people into smaller social housing or face housing benefit cuts. A lot of people, such as those with sick spouses, single parents who need a room for their children to stay in when they visit etc will be forced to move into the private sector where housing benefit will have to cover the full rent, which is 35-45% higher than social housing, costing the taxpayer more money . What an absolute Tory balls up. No doubt this will be subject to U-Turn in the next 6 months.

Why should poor people have spare rooms eh? What old boy? Another large brandy? Jolly good.

Also, old chap, my rental properties are struggling a bit at the moment...we have to get some new tenants from somewhere...let's winkle some more of the plebs out of their houses!,we can sell the council houses too old bean.

Any links to this policy ? Just I can't find it on the BBC.

We'd love to have a spare room, but can't afford it. Will the council pay for us to have a bigger flat?

So, a single person, unemployed, that finds himself with a spare bedroom in a council property gets full housing benefit let's say £90 per week. He is then financially forced into the private sector because there are no one bedroom flats available due to waiting lists. He can then select a one bedroom flat and housing benefit will cough up, up to £250! Where is the financial logic? Crazy policy. Heaping more burden on the taxpayer!

Surely the bottom line here is we just don't have enough social housing? We should not be paying private landlords housing benefit.

'Right to Buy' has to be one of the most bonkers ideas ever?

Sure poor people can have spare rooms ... if they can afford it. But poor people on benefits (in other words living off MY taxes) do not need and should not have spare rooms.
Except the disabled who might need to have a carer stay with them over night or single parants who have children to stay or people who have children in the forces who keep a room at home for when on leave or disabled people who need the extra room to store medical equipment. I would also point out that a lot of these people have paid in to the system for years and are getting shafted yet again to profit the few

Is the correct answer!

The key word in the policy is "assessed". It's not a blanket policy where if you are single or a couple you get a 1 bed flat etc If the council assses you need extra space for carers or your children then you won't have your benefit docked. This is designed to cover people inhabiting large homes where their kids have moved out for good but are still getting a big property on peanut rents.

Indeed but that doesn't suit the government bashers arguments. We'd love a spare room but can't afford the next step up the housing ladder - that's how the real world works.
