Again, I've not said I want us to be like Switzerland per-se. I've just offered them up as an example of a strong functioning economy that operates within Europe without being part of the EU. It shows that it is actually possible to exist and thrive without being in the club.

Just depends whether or not you believe Britain could find its own way.

You've offered them up as an example of a 'strong functioning economy' but want to ignore the realities of Swiss trade that I've pointed out, are behind that economy.

But then a lot of concern from the Leave campaign appears to be around immigration and Switzerland has freedom of movement iirc.

The Remain crew keep on harping on about the huge marketplace of the EU-what a load of totally misleading twaddle,as usual. Most of our exports go to France,Germany,Italy, and Spain. We export a great deal of sod-all to the rest,so who cares if they won't play with us?

So, to 'the EU' then, via functioning trade agreements.

But whatever those realities may be, the end result is a prosperous nation with low unemployment. They have found a way, why can't we ?

I can't wait for the fixtures to come out.

We (and I fully include myself in this) have become golf club bores.

Where is the NSC of stick insect illnesses, crisp world cups, left back crises and Paul Barber being spotted on a flight to Argentina?

Politics OUT.

Because they have a high skilled, highly educated indigenous population, which specialises in the wealth management part of the service sector. The historic refusal of Swiss banks to release information about their clients in relation to financial transactions has made the country a prime location for the money of despots, criminals and other undesirables. Switzerland is very good at managing this money, it is difficult to see how the UK could replace them at this.

The challenge for this country is to become more educated, more productive, more smart. Part of our culture though is to sneer at those in education or who are educated, as no one likes a smart arse, do they? Given the amount of invective given to economists on the referendum threads and the likes of Farage I'm surprised I'm not bottled when I go out the front door. The referendum vote will have no impact on this issue regardless of the outcome.

Whilst average income in Switzerland is high, the median figure is much lower due to wealth being concentrated in the hands of the few. There is also plenty of cheap foreign labour employed to do the jobs that are too demeaning for the Swiss to do themselves, and this works out for all concerned.

For the UK to become more like Switzerland it would take at least two generations of changing attitudes to education, wealth and the state safety net, as well as inventing some tasty triangular chocolate (from triangular trees) with triangular honey (from triangular bees).

A growing economy underpinned by immigration! Which the Leavers are fundamentally opposed to.

Switzerland has the highest per capita immigration of all Europe. 20% of the entire population are immigrants. A quarter of their entire population was born outside Switzerland.

That alone is what is keeping the Swiss economy buoyant - not mountains of red tape, exports of cuckoo clocks or one-sided trade deals with China.

Jobs up again today however if we go out interest rates it's always the poor that suffer vote to stay and reform the EU

On what evidence do you base your belief that the EU is reformable ? With the prospect of one of the major contributors leaving a few scraps were thrown Dave's way and it was made perfectly clear that they were dragged from the rest very unwillingly. If we vote to stay, they will be tossed aside, probably in the European Court and it will be business as usual. These beaurocrats are happy to consign a generation of youth in the Southern European countries to years of unemployment, and grind Greece into the dust to protect their pet project, The Euro. Do you really think they'll give our demands for reform the time of day once we've voted to stay in ?

As someone who has worked for a Swiss company for 20 years, works with very many Swiss nationals, and who travels very regularly and extensively there, I feel reasonable well placed to comment on this.

1. The Swiss are thoroughly pissed off with their relationship with the EU. Not in it, but contributing heavily to it. They neither have their cake, nor eat it.
2. Swiss import export laws - even just within Europe, are a MASSIVE ball-ache. I am reminded of this at work pretty much every working day.
3. Switzerland has bigger immigration issues than we ever have or ever will.
4. The Swiss mind set on trade agreements is inherently protectionist. It has not done them many favours.
5. Levels of bureaucracy are hugely, hugely more problematic than here.

but hey, let's leave, and be like Switzerland.

Doesn't seem to have affected their standard of living. Whenever I have visited the whole country seems well heeled, no slums etc..

.........and 25% of the population is migrant, yet the Swiss have kept their culture.

45% of the popular vote will lose you an EU referendum but it will usually win you a General Election. So if we vote REMAIN will the Tory LEAVE MPs band together with UKIP to create a super-party with a manifesto commitment of leaving the EU in 2025?

I won't be voting for Osbourne or Boris due to all the referendum lies.

But I can't vote for Corbyn as he wants to bin the nukes.

So who leads the Lib Dems now ? I don't remember.

I've always voted Labour, and I like Corbyn. But I can't vote for him because of his naivety on that issue.

Wouldn't vote for the Tories as I have a social conscience..

You're a bit deluded if you think the economy will do anything other than shrink - that's why all manner of economic experts are lining up to tell us. Trade won't stop but there will tariffs placed on all sorts of industries. The unknown is by how much the economy would shrink. Oh and the value of your savings will shrink by a quarter almost overnight when the pound slumps in value too.

*if* there are tariff, that would be years away, nothing changes on 24th June or 24th Dec 2016, not even 24th Dec 2017, except maybe a few companies investment plans, both positive and negative to inward investment. there are unknowns if we stay. focusing on headlines about the stockmarket doesnt help, Dax was down, CAC was down, Nikkei was down (something like 3.7% on Monday)... this is all due to Brexit?

Osborne just painted himself into a corner, there's already problems in his budget and a slowing growth, even minor recession is quite likely within this parliament. he's just presented us with the intended policy regardless of Brexit

All joking aside, in part, yes.

Absolutely.

Even as a Conservative you must flinch at the lack of an effective opposition. Corbyn is the political equivalent of Hyppia.

Exactly. I have always said you need a strong opposition to keep the current lot in check. Whoever they may be.

Sadly I have no faith in either or current govt nor the opposition.

For that reason (and the fact my kids said so) I'm voting IN. Someone has to keep the current lot in check.

If I had a government that actually truly gave a shit about its people and this country (or won an election by more than 34% eligible to vote) then I may have a different view. But the current lot are sh1t bags and so we need a higher authority and I don't mean the unelected House of Lords.

I think that's Toblerone you're thinking about.

Sent from Konnie Huq's lingerie drawer.

I was having a conversation with someone who was adamant that the Swiss only allow migrants who come in on a working permit/visa that when they're done/retirement they go back to where they came from.

I was dubious but never looked it up. He'd been there a few times for work and was sure of it.

Bollocks? ???

Genuinely don't know. Would be surprised if their EU deal allowed that but I don't know it chapter and verse.
