Ah! The Championship, the eternal graveyard of the BIG clubs who, ahem!, should be in the Premier League. The likes of Aston Villa, Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland . . . wait a minute, didn’t they? Anyway, has it not occurred to these arrogant idiots that these these clubs have been run so appallingly badly that they deserve to be exactly where they are.

On the other hand, the SMALL clubs that have managed their affairs admirably both on and off the pitch, the clubs that are not privileged, the clubs that do not feel that the football world owes them a living, are the ones that have grafted, played good football and earned the their just reward - a place in the top tier of English football.

So tough bananas Mr.Collymore, and the rest of you that think big is beautiful, wake up and smell the burger and fried onions! It is the clubs that are well run, from top to bottom, pay and play within their means, are the the successful ones. Put that in your proverbial pipe and smoke it!

At what point can a small* club convert to a medium or big club? Is there a qualification period?

* small = not historically a Premier/ 1st Division club

Three 'kids' seated behind us at Villa Park started the small club/big club - no history thang after we enjoyed the Villa goal disallowed last week.

Decided to ignore the taunts, no need. A smug grin sufficed.

" The Premier League as a brand needs Aston Villa and other big clubs like Leeds, Nottingham Forest, and Derby.
We are being overloaded with smaller clubs that have sneaked into the Premier League, are cheap to buy, and have low expectations.
They get to the top flight and then roll over and have their bellies tickled by the big sides.
Yeah, because Derby wouldn't roll over and have their belly tickled, oh no.

I remember several years ago, Collymore pushing the idea that relegation from the premier league should be abolished, or something similar - of course this was when Villa were still there.

I think he's haunted by the fact that when he joined his 'boyhood club', he failed miserably and didn't apply himself as a professional footballer. Prick.

Was reading today that IF Villa make it back up to the PL, Terry will have it in his contract that he does not play against Chelsea. Absolutely pathetic.
Surely that should be against PL rules?

Not quite. Tony Bloom took over from DK in 2009 (albeit Dick never described himself as the owner).

Contracts are between clubs and players to draw up, can't see how it'd be against any rules. Similar to when a player arrives on loan - the clubs decide between themselves whether that player will be allowed to play against his parent club or not.

If I was going to produce a list of words I associate with Aston Villa, 'vibrancy' would be one of the last I'd choose. Of all the clubs who have spent a significant amount of time in the PL in the last 10-15 years there surely hasn't been one as dull, unimaginative and tedious as Villa. Perhaps Sunderland is the only other club that comes to mind as offering absolutely nothing to the party, but I'd still say I'd rather have watched them most seasons over Villa. Boring club, boring fans, boring location, boring football. Even in the Championship, with the benefit of spending obscene amounts compared to their rivals, they've continued to serve up remarkably unattractive football.

I'd probably add Middlesbrough to your criteria there.

Perhaps Villa's one saving grace is their splendid stadium.

Two points.
If the FA Cup was seeded, where would the likes of Villa and Leeds be put.
And will Terry wear a Chelsea shirt under his Villa shirt should they play each other?
Come on Fulham

I now want Fulham to roll over the entitled Villa even more. Collymore is a girlfriend beating, dogging ****.and was also a complete and utter mercenary as a player. **** him.

“Stan the Man” should stick to his specialist subjects, wife beating and Putin noshing. If he means Brighton (we’re a small club btw) don’t deserve to be in the PL and that we must have Villa instead as they’re a “big club” then his opinion is laughable. Football is a meritocracy. End of.

You missed dogging

Premier League rules mean a loan player is not permitted to play against the club that holds their registration (permitted in cup games however AIUI).

The Villa team of the 70's were a delight to watch.
