But it was played on Top of the Pops every week for 8 years, and still no one bought it!Sorry but way to vague a question. What defines a ' Top Band ' as purely subjective and what's a hit?
Led Zeppelin have sold in excess of 300 million records and Whole Lotta Love only made it to no. 21 in UK charts
TOTP used the cover version by CCS.But it was played on Top of the Pops every week for 8 years, and still no one bought it!
Strictly speaking, they used a rerecording of CCS' version. Which used almost all the same musicians, given CCS was largely all studio players anyway.TOTP used the cover version by CCS.
Yes, for a time, TOTP insisted on bands re-recording their songs (before miming to them!) Something to do with not playing the records, I suppose? Copyright, record company royalties or something?Strictly speaking, they used a rerecording of CCS' version. Which used almost all the same musicians, given CCS was largely all studio players anyway.

Split due to musical similarities.Seagulls Ska only reached no.16.
Whatever happened to them?
Wow! I wouldn't have thought that - but you're absolutely right. Eight UK number one albums in a row, but no top single.Led Zeppelin never had a top 20 single in the UK.
Largely because they never released any singles in the UK while they were together.Wow! I wouldn't have thought that - but you're absolutely right. Eight UK number one albums in a row, but no top single.
This is the issue. I mean, look at Led Zeppelin. Not many singles as such and when they did I'm not sure they troubled the scorekeepers. What counts as a hit song? Top ten? A couple of weeks in the lower reaches of the charts peaking at no. 37?
Just saw the earlier post. Ignore me.This is the issue. I mean, look at Led Zeppelin. Not many singles as such and when they did I'm not sure they troubled the scorekeepers.
Going to Michael Head at Chalk in May. Can't wait. Was a big fan of the Pale Fountains and Shack.Right now any group featuring Michael Head. Wonderful singer songwriter from Liverpool. Currently performing as Michael Head and the Red Elastic Band.
Also Manu Chao has never had a hit in this country, probably because he sings mostly in Spanish and French and does not tour here. Well worth a listen, now top of my must see’s even if its a backstreet club in Zaragoza.
