Sad indeed, whilst rarely agreeing with his politics I respected him for being truthful and honest throughtout. He was also one of the few politicians in the last 50 years who realised that a coherent energy policy was required. Sadly due to BNOC/civil service nonsense it never happened.

The socialist Eton? I'll try to find an article by ones of its former pupils who wrote an hilarious book about it. The way they described it, it was like a Steiner school. Is it still the only comprehensive in Kensington?

My Dad who taught there donkey's years would have a good laugh about both statements if he would had successfully turned 109 last August. He had a few tales to tell. HP was a superior comp (and I taught at South Kilburn High in my day) but a Steiner school? LOL.

I'm honestly not looking for an argument on this thread but there's no denying his children all attended private schools. I admired him in a lot of ways although disliking him intensely but as I've said previously it's a sad week for British politics. I'll leave this thread now.

He and his kind made the Labour Party unelectable for a decade, nearly split it in two if he had beaten Healey to the deputy leader role.

Which shows how stupid the voters of the time really were. He supported nationalising the banks and leaving the EU. I wonder if we'd be in the mess we are now if people had listened to him ?

RIP Tony, personal hero of mine and one of the last political greats, especially on the left.

Absolutely this. I'm feeling really saddened by his passing, but will concentrate on remembering his compassion & principled standing: both in his political career and his life away from the back-stabbing corridors of power.

Always thought he was an old fraud. Converted from Anthony Wedgewood Benn from a privileged background to bitter, yet articulate, Tony Benn the Left wing Labour activist.

A fraud? I cannot take this seriously. Even my staunch Thatcher loving Tory father admired Tony Benn for his honesty and principles and trust me for him to say this is something.

This is a sad day. I saw Tony Benn speak at my university just after I moved away from home. He certainly played a part when I was forming my own political beliefs.

His father was given the title as a Liberal peer.

Not so. His father was a Liberal MP from 1906 until 1927, when he resigned from both Parliament and the Liberal Party. He was re-elected to Parliament as a Labour MP, in 1928, and remained active in Labour politics until he died. He was given his peerage in 1942 and was a member of Attlee's post-war Labour government. After leaving government, he sat as a back-bench Labour peer until he died in 1960.

Incidentally, it was Churchill who appointed William Wedgwood Benn as a Labour peer, because Churchill wanted a bigger Labour Party presence in the Lords, to achieve a better political balance in the Lords and better support the war effort.

Didn't agree with his politics, but there can be no question that we have lost a political giant and fantastic speaker.

If only one of the today's so called leader had the same courage of their convictions, we might be better placed.

There are very few that can be applied to, I can only think of two others in my adult life, one from either side of the political divide, and they are all now dead.
