At the time Calzaghe had already beat the best, Kessler. Froch hadn't earned the right to fight Calzaghe back then and Calzaghe would have outclassed him. Clearly if it was Calzaghe 5 years ago v the Froch of today we'd have one hell of a fight on our hands and there might be a different outcome.

Calzaghe did the right thing for himself and his family by taking 2 big money fights in the states to set up his retirement.

I would have to say though, Froch's career has definitely become more exciting than Calzaghe's ever was. Although you could argue that there are just simply more better fighters in the weight class now than there was in Calzaghe's days.

Boxing will always be a sport of if's and but's. I mean we're STILL waiting for mayweather v pacquiao FFS.

I think you may have misinterpreted my post. I'm not saying calzaghe should have fought froch but his first 10 defences of his WBO super middleweight title should have been more testing and outside of his comfort zone. He should have fought Jones Jnr, Hopkins & Toney in the early to mid 2000's. He only started taking risky fights at the later part of his career from Lacy onwards. Calzaghe would have beaten any super-middle from theses shores he was too good, but what frustrates me is he never tested himself until right at the end. Can you see Froch ever taking a home coming defence against the winner of a reality tv show in Peter Manfredo Jnr? Absolutely not that's why Froch's career has already surpassed Calzaghes.

Would Froch have beaten Benn or Eubank?

Would be two great fights particularly the Benn fight but I think he comes up short against both. Benn like Froch was fearless winning in the US against Barkley and De Witt were two of the best away performances by a British fighter in recent history.

He also took on a peak Gerald McClellan who was one of the most feared fighters of the nineties and came back to win after being knocked out of the ring in the first round.

As for Eubank he would have found a way to win always did up until the Watson second fight where he understandably lost his killer instinct.

Benn definitely as Nigel's main weapon was his knock out power and Froch's chin is granite. Technically he is a far better fighter than Benn.

Eubank in his prime is a very, very tough one to call. I would marginally give it to Froch but would have been a magnificent fight.

I think you underestimate Nigel Benn technically he wasn't purely a slugger he could box too, and Froch isn't exactly Floyd Mayweather. His defence can be porous and his foot work is crude at times. Andre Ward dealt with him fairly comfortably because Froch didn't have the technical skills to land or the savvy to change tactics when he was behind on the cards. I would give the edge to Benn in a prime against prime match up.

Fantastic tear-up, Froch was tremendous.

Nice touch having the Forest badge on his shorts. I'd love it if we had a class fighter in the ring wearing an Albion badge.

There is a young Brighton boxer called Lloyd Ellet whose had 4 or 5 pro fights now at welterweight i think, not sure how far he will go but he fights in Brighton colours with blue and white striped shorts with the badge and blue and white striped gumshield. A shame Chris Eubank Jnr doesnt wear the colours.

Gotcha!

Couldn't agree more in that Calzaghe maybe should have fought better fighters earlier on. He wanted an unbeaten record though, one of his heros Rocky Marciano had an unbeaten record of 49 I think.. And at that time im guessing that was his aim. He did fight good fighters in Eubank, Jeff lacy, Kessler and Hopkins but yes froch has fought ALL the good fighters at the right times which makes froch's career Argubly better to some. Other will say 'yea but Calzaghe was unbeaten, world champ for 10 years and did beat the best ultimately'. Boxing will always divide opinions.

Both top notch IMO although right now, Froch has been more exciting for fans, boxing is entertainment at the end of the day and he seems to be giving fight fans what they want which is very refreshing! Hopefully he fights Kessler again next! Would be a proper 'tear up'!

A Kessler rematch really excites me. Kessler unlike Bute can take Froch's best shot and vice versa which means we are almost certain to get another classic twelve round contest. I expect Froch to win a close decision in Nottingham or the o2 in London.

Spot on... I think the boxing division back then was the best ever and for both Benn and Eubank to be as successful as they were shows how good they both were (in different ways)

Both Benn and Eubank would win...
