The God Delusion

Doubt that I'll watch it tonight but I may record it out of interest, Professor Dawkins seems pretty anti religion though.

Professor Dawkins seems pretty anti religion though.

That's like saying Hitler was pretty anti-jews.

Zoologist Dawkins is indeed quite anti-religion for someone who doesn't really understand the first thing about it.

But it's okay to arrogantly decare ''there is a God''?

I'm no believer in deities, but I concede that such a thing is unfalsifiable. It's a shame he can't see the hypocrisy in his constant attempts to get people to jump on his atheist bandwagon, which ultimately requires faith as well.

Why is Dawkins any different to a priest? They both preach to people about their opinions on religion. Dawkins counts priests among his friends, but they just have different beliefs.

It seems to me that Dawkins very much has a life - he's dedicated his life to science, and believes religion goes against that. You'll find many religious people trying to discredit science for the same reason.

Cant think of one single subject that has caused more death and destruction over the last couple of millenia than religion. Its a blight on the world.

People killing other people in the name of some fictional character would be funny if it didnt cause so much fecking misery.

Because religion may or may not have caused all the world problems and wars, does that mean there is no god?

The book is very good and sold millions, I am looking forward to it. Oh and to say Dawkins does not know much about religion is crazy, read the book and you will see that he knows every religion inside out!

Bit of a shit god to allow the death and destruction of millions, upon millions of the flock.

If there is a god, hes a pretty shit one, but common sense tells me this is fantasy.

God does not start wars, man does. I'm not a Christain, Jew or Muslim. I belive there is a 'god', somtimes called 'fate' or 'mother nature' or 'that was lucky'

BTW, I was Cameran Diaz for a joke on US birthday thread - being myself now!

I have no problem with his views and good on him for saying what he believes. Think of all the hundreds of thousands of people preaching extremist religious views and not allowing anyone to question them.

Because his beliefs are based on mountains of evidence. (Evolution etc)
A priest's beliefs are based on...... hear-say and mythology? (Adam and eve etc)

I saw the first episode of this on 4 catch up last week.

There always seems to come a point when the religious (mostly evangelical christians in this episode) cannot discuss the matter any further or answer anymore questions but instead feel the need to shout him down and end the conversation.

I really do try to keep an open mind but it seems that nothing is open for discussion with theology. You either believe or you don't.

Alot of nazi war criminals were christians, and according to the "rules" of christianity, they are in heaven, and all the jews are in hell. Because they accept christ as their saviour and all sins are forgiven. How loving and just this christian god is.

and a woman wrote Harry Potter.
which is no more fanciful than the bible.

So, having let millions of his flock die in countless wars over his name.
What has he given back?

Get more back off a scratch card.

edit: and I admit im bored, so will quite likely offend quite a few god botherers, but as in my eyes, thats no more than offending people who read Harry Potter books etc im not really bothered

Evolution describes the process of how life changes over time to adapt to its environment, and many believers in God can incorporate this into their beliefs.

Evolution and certainly Dawkins cannot explain the origins of life, the laws of physics, the elements, the four fundamental forces, the cause and origins of the universe and so on - all of which are vital for our being.

If God was put forward as a theory to explain why everything is, it is one of our stronger ones. A lot stronger than Dawkins/atheists obscene confidence that it all was just a fortunate coincidence that's for sure...

It's a shame because all the monotheistic religions believe in the same thing -one God, the creator of everything. It is a shame they cannot put their pathetic ritualistic differences aside and realise they can believe in and worship the 'one true God' together.

Mostly agree with this, except that evolution and the origins of life do not require a "fortunate coincidence" without the presence of a god. You might call the fact that we are here in the human minds and bodies we know ourselves now, as that. But one small change in the evolutionary history may well have meant completely different species and surroundings to what we are now. It may be fortunate, but it is no coincidence. It's just how it turned out.

Ermmm... According to Darwin it is not a fortunate coincidence. It's called "evolution"
