Luton Town have released a statement regarding the condition of captain Tom Lockyer, who collapsed before play was abandoned against Bournemouth. The statement reads
:

"We all hope and pray for our leader and captain Tom Lockyer, who is thankfully responsive and has been taken to hospital.

"We don’t know the full extent of what happened and what the next steps are at this stage, but we thank Bournemouth and the medical staff on both sides for their immediate response, which was absolutely amazing.

"We are sorry to all supporters present that players from both sides were in no state of mind to continue with the game after seeing their much-loved team-mate and friend taken off like that, and staff could not carry on with managing the game in such circumstances having had to deal with the situation.

"We thank everyone for the wonderful applause and singing of Locks’ name inside the stadium at such a difficult time. Now is the time for all of our players, staff and supporters to come together as we always do and give our love and support to Tom and his family.

"Our thoughts are with him and them all."

Great news he’s alert and responsive - surprised they didn’t carry it on with that news but empathise with the emotions of those out there which prob played a part. Get well soon.
If he was on CPR for 15 minutes, he could easily have been dead at 30 even if his heart was back beating. He may still end up with some long term issues.

There will be a time for conversations around playing players with this sort of medical history. But now is not that time. All the best Tom
For me, there’s nothing wrong with discussing it in a sensible and sensitive way, though I get where you’re coming from. When a prominent politician dies you always get heartless idiots saying 'good riddance" which I find truly horrible. But when a player collapses I think it’s fine to respectfully pass comment, especially when you hear that he’s 'alert and responsive'. It's the third time he’s collapsed during a game, and sadly for him, and his teammates and their fans, he may well be now advised to curtail his career. But of course we all wish him well in his recovery.

Is it a legal requirement for a footballer to be insured ?
Maybe not but would a club be happy picking up the tab, one for the medical stuff but also the cost of games being disrupted. Today would likely to have cost a lot of money to the club's involved.

I should add yes, it is mandatory for the club (any club) to have liability insurance.

No reason for it to be a legal requirement to insure one’s own health but there may be a sort of mandatory 3rd party liability insurance in case you accidentally end someone else’s career. Clubs do insure players against permanent injury to help protect their investment. I’m sure some policies will include insurance cover for the player too.

Isnt it up to the player in question?

If he knows the risks and is happy with them, who are we to stop him
I would suggest his friends and family should come into consideration on that - and also players who may play with him - or against him. Incidents can be very traumatic for them too.

First and foremost though, all the best to Tom Lockyer, wishing him a full recovery and a long and happy life - even though that might not be as a footballer.

I do wonder though, why this sort of event (and I realise I'm jumping to huge conclusions lumping them all together) seems to be getting more common. I don't remember reading of any such event before poor Marc Vivian Foe, but since then we've had Christian Eriksson collapsing, Enoch Mwepu forced to retire, (possibly) young Offiah, and now Tom Lockyer.
Is it actually occurring more often? - and if so, why?
