No worries about where the next rent/mortgage payment is coming from.

They don't get paid and unless they get money sent in they cannot afford something as basic as a packet of biscuits. Also, unless they are doing a very long sentance the 'education' is about as good as the food.

not quite true bhaex, prisoners who attend education get paid £1.05 per session (basic rate) or £1.33 (enhanced). if they choose to stay in their cells and do nothing they get something like £2.50 per week. they can do other jobs on the wings as well should they want to and they can also do work in the workshops at the same rate as above. the education in prison is improving but it is not up to that much. they seem to be more into stats (bums on seats). i work in a jail most weeks.

The reason that education isn't up to much is that most of them do it rather tan the very menial jobs that you get. How about taking stickers off coat hangers for a few hours ?

Prison is not a life of luxury  well it depends what prison obviously.

Open prisons like Ford are one thing. However many of our prisons date back to the 19th Century and they don't have much in the way of creature comforts. I don't have much sympathy but it's really not true about luxuries.

If these prisons are such delightful places then why are people not clambering to get in there?

Its the people you meet I believe....

Seriously I have worked in a few Prisons (going to High Down HMP this monday coming to scope a job) and they are profoundly horrible places.

On the other hand the clientele tend to be not very nice people either so I don't lose sleep about it.

I don't think they do anything to stop people reoffending but they do keep oiks (and worse) off the street so
