I've got it! Patio heaters. We need patio heaters like they've got outside pubs for the smokers. We don't need to equip the whole of the South Stand, just one block. Then we can have a singing section and a warm section!

Now where's Martin Perry's email address ....

As I posted on another thread:

Slightly OT but in today's Sport Argus yet another whinge about the Withdean experience. Is it me or am I the only one getting fed up with all these moans? Okay it's not the best but I enjoyed yesterday's game of football, had a great view from the South Stand, there was quite a good atmosphere for parts of the game and I was home in Seaford by 6.0pm. Better than the Gillingham Experience.
I wonder if we will get all nostalgic about the place when we finally leave?

I don't go anymore more not because of the cost, but because the atmosphere is simply non-existant. It is boring, dull and sterile beyond belief.
I agree. I think a decent atmosphere is probably more important than the quality of the team actually. But buying a ticket well in advance, and paying £25 to rattle around in a non-league arena with 5,000 others with no roof or facilities is not really going to tick all the boxes. Even if we're in form. The players deserve better really, but that is the reality.
When Falmer is built, we'll fill the place for 2 seasons however well we're playing and in whatever division. I know so many people who are just biding their time, waiting for Withdean to become a distant memory.

I sent this to the club a few weeks ago. Of course, I got the club's standard no reply. I'll share it with you as an example of just how passionate fans of the club like me are getting the hump with the albion these days; West Ham ticket fiasco, rude and unhelpful stewards (my disabled nephew was disgracefully treated a while ago which really upset me and my family), switching of so many sat games means I just can't get to Friday night ones now and so I've lost a lot of money because nobody wants to buy them off me anymore (and I can't always get to Sat games either).......More and more I think this club doesn't give a shit about loyal supporters anymore. Anyway, here's my letter, let the slagging-me off begin! But you'd think the club would respond - even if it's a thank you, we've passed your thoughts on......But no, not even that courtesy. So **** 'em, I'll come back when Falmer's built / if we're doing well and then not as a STH.

My fellow season ticket supporters and I would like to share our thoughts and ideas concerning the alarming slide in Albion’s attendances in the hope that it will help the club’s ongoing attempts to address this important matter.

Perhaps in contrast to other correspondence you have undoubtedly received, I will not mention the cost of tickets. They are obviously high for many well documented reasons and I believe the club’s pricing strategies have always attempted to offer supporters the very best deal it can under our unique operating circumstances. My only suggestion here is make the transport element optional e.g. sell tickets including this as it can be good value or remove it for those, like me, who don’t use it (fight the council’s imposition of this if necessary – it’s killing their club!). Instead, I’d like to comment on several other “no-cost” variables which (like ticket prices) are integral to the awful Withdean Experience but perhaps nobody’s discussing; but I believe you can and must do something about immediately. If addressed (and publicised that they have been) I believe the club will immediately see match gates rise.

Park & Ride

Pre Match:
Those coming from M.House could and should stop at a couple of additional places on route to the ground e.g. pubs – where fans like to congregate. Make it easier and align it with fan’s culture and maybe more will attend. Especially if drivers or perhaps ‘volunteers’ can sell match tickets to anyone who’s decided to go “last minute” and turns up at the bus stop.

Post Match:
The organisation of this operation is often a shambles, and has been for years. Which is why people continually feel compelled to leave early; or, coupled with other “Withdean Experience” factors, don’t come in the first place. Supporters queue unnecessarily for long periods because buses are loaded 1 at a time, front to back. Not only does that mean the queue starts ‘furthest from the ground’ but people are channelled towards just one ‘doorway’ instead of several. If a count was taken using a handheld clicker, with a steward responsible for loading a bus, then once the capacity has been reached the bus could depart. Stewards may have to cry “3 more for this bus to Mill Road” and even “hurry up,” “move upstairs,” “we want to get you home fast” etc but aren’t they paid to do something like this (and the current feeling is they add little or no value during this operation)? Their entire mindset needs changing; they should envisage the post match getaway as akin to an emergency evacuation rather than a leisurely procedure that manages itself. Why not chuck some performance KPIs in to ensure standards are maintained?! Make someone accountable? Lastly if the buses on the right at the bottom of the road are for one destination and the left for the other, you immediately separate the transportation of fans into a more manageable task. Within a couple of games this component of the “Withdean Experience” will be much improved. But too long has this element been poorly managed. I hope you agree it’s time for a re-think?

Atmosphere
Various initiatives have been tried with limited success. But all too often those of us who want to create some sort of atmosphere are often the victims of petty stewarding both gaining entrance to and during a match: why can the Anfield Kop wave banners and flags of enormous size (which require more than just a stick to support) but at Brighton anything on a pole would be refused entrance? We’re pre-judged under “H&S” (perhaps, ironically, the 3 most dangerous words in the English language as Stephen Fry once said) to want to throw them as missiles or use in combat against away supporters – a quite ridiculous notion, especially given the ‘Olympic gap’ between south and west stands; anyone who could throw anything that distance should be congratulated and fast tracked to represent the country in 2012. I’ve watched single supporters, and there’s largely at least one or 2 in each row/block, be continually harassed if they stand up to act as ‘vocal points’ to get the crowd singing. Just leave them alone, they’re not swearing, they’re not annoying anyone and they’re badly needed! The council won’t take our licence away because 1 supporter every few rows stands up trying to gee the crowd on. So please tell stewards to stop acting like unfriendly jobs-worths, especially when away fans often stand for entire matches without anyone raising an eyebrow. It demonstrates double standards of the pettiest nature. And we’re the home fans! Let people throw a bog roll as streamers a la the 80’s and 90’s why is this deemed a violent act? Just how many people were injured in past decades by Andrex?! Many many supporters constantly cite the poor atmosphere, that football’s changed etc as a reason, coupled with others, to stay away – regardless of the lack of roof. Seating arrangements need to be drastically looked at too to address the fact you can’t bring a friend and sit next to them if you’re an existing STH. But we need radical re-thinking rather than accepting the present situation.

Other
· Please sort the tannoy out in the south stand too! For 8 seasons we’ve been unable to hear it in the bottom half of the south stand!

· Sell tickets via the van around Sussex

· Consultation with fans – how about a monthly “ask a question” and you release the answers via the web on a podcast? Dick and co were excellent at fan liaison several years ago but I definitely feel it’s slipped in recent seasons.

As you can tell, I’ve spent some time writing this letter. I wish you good luck in your relatively new job and hope that my suggestions are taken on board. Unfortunately the club has always had a victim mentality; too often it’s always been about “why things can’t be done, rather than how they can”. I sincerely hope this trait can be addressed in relation to this matter. Because it is, and always will be, OUR club e.g. you’re not alone when it comes to help!

You can be sure that fans will return to home games in numbers during the last season at Withdean (2009/10), as the club will have produced a scheme giving priority for matches at Falmer to those attending matches at Withdean regularly.

I don't think that the North Stand and South Stand (provided it's not raining) are that bad. Away fans have a dreadful view and the east stands are a long way back. But Withdean is better than Layer Road (where most fans have a restricted view) and Underhill.

Depends what your after really. I love grounds like Layer Road and Underhill, and personally prefer them to the likes of St. Marys and the Walkers clones.

Shit football and a lowly position means low crowds, not sure I can EVER remember decent football, high in the league AND shit attendances at Brighton though and knowing how many used to turn out to watch us, 5,500 for what is almost a top of the table clash is worrying imo.

Can't be that people think it's sold out imo, if you want to go you'd check it out, surely? 3/10 excuse or clutching at straws

Its too fecking expensive to sit in the open and get drenched everytime it rains...
i had 7 seasons of it but now will not get another season ticket until Falmer when the proces will then match the facilities (hopefully) on offer.......I will now pick and choose like the other missing thousand or so supporters from last season

to watch a team on a good run against the table toppers. That is dire!

Where have all the Albion fans gone?
Watching Sussex non-league clubs
Chelshit
Christmas shopping
It's all the fault of Withdean/the stewards/the lack of atmosphere.

Whatever the reasons this is getting serious and will probably cost us players in January.
Does anyone remember the days when we told Reading that our fan basewas bigger and more loyal than theirs?
Of course our fan base is far bigger:glare:
You really need to get a grip like most on here, peoplew on here actually think our fan base has gone, our fan base is still massive and the thousands are waiting.Do some of you numptys not understand that withdean is a dire shitehole?
i hate the place and im one of thousands who won't return, not even £10 tickets will make much diffrence. In the early years at the withdean getting a ticket was pure gold dust as some 20-25k would apply and near on fail while in the championship as also was gold dust in the lower leagues before that.Fans don't just dissappear into the mist:whisky:

1,shite stadium+facilities
2,stupidly high ticket prices
3,no money for players
4,the ticketing system is an absolute joke

Im sure there is a fair few more, once falmer is built it will be huge and crowds will flock and shock most of you as it won't be big enough.Yes im very confident of this.Just hate people who judge withdean on our future potential:angry:

I am stillconcerned about attendances at Falmer. 10K people in a 25K venue is still more than half empty. The stadium is not going to be a magic wand without an entertaining product.

You honestly think we'll have more than 20,000 people apply for ST at Falmer? is that what you're implying?

If we're in the same division I'd say that is highly optimistic

There's also been a lot of games in november. I can't make them all but even I've been to 4 homes (Walsall, Chelts x 2 & Carlisle) & 1 away. Even at discounts, that's a fair chunk of dosh.

I tell you what i was shocked about on saturday.

Quite clearly, it was a Dead atmosphere (apart from the 50 or so In H block, who didn't stop singing)

Except, when you did score the two goals, the place was electric and there was a real buzz around the place.....so to me attendence has nothing to do it with it......ways to improve? Score every 5 mins & the place will be buzzing:)

and has always been so even at the Goldstone. The Brighton crowd will rock when we score a couple of goals or when it does not agree with the Ref. It is very rare however for a Brighton crowd to create an atmoshere from the word go.
I can recall some very dead atmospheres at the Goldstone.
