Perhaps you will get behind the team now instead of writing them off at every oppurtunity
Whatever happens in the semis we can be proud of the entire squad now because today they were IMMENSE, We can stand tall and say "we beat the Aussie" and beat them well ! They could not compete with our forwards
So ...................TAXI FOR THE AUSTRALIANS !!!!:bigwave:

No, they weren't. The forwards were immense, the backs were as bad as they have been for the entire tournament.

I think that's a bit harsh Genders

The game was definitely won in the pack but the backs did their bit. Jason Robinson was excellent, with one superb break in the first half and Mike Catt was also very good before he went off.

It was a superb TEAM effort but will they be able to pull another performance (which will need to be even more INTENSIVE) in the semi?

It is a bit. The backs were, on the whole, good defensively but what has concerned me from the opening game is that there just isn't any cutting edge. Some of the tactical kicking from the backs today was superb, but the three quarter line never looked like scoring a try. If, of course, the backs hadn't been so strong in defence, we would have lost the game.

Fair enough but we still won didn't we ! You still can't praise them can you ?
Are you a secret Aussie ?
:D

Of course I can - as I've said on another thread, it was a great result, the forwards were excellent and I'm very happy that England won.

You really aren't getting any joy from this English resurgence are you, I take it that you are English though?

Your condemnation of the team after the Tonga game was as ott as your suggestion that the backs were bad in this game. They may not have scored tries, which I accept is frustrating but they also tackled and competed well enough to restrict the Aussies to one try. That in itself is worth praise isn't it? Or are you suggesting that the forwards also did all the tackling of the Aussie backs as well??

Why not try and enjoy it rather than looking for faults, it's fun to be an England supporter again after 4 years of being beaten by teams we should not be losing to. Ashton has worked a minor miracle imo and ALL the team deserve praise from today.

I'm only sorry I didn't take peoples advice and watch the whole of the rugby. :nono:

I had a feeling in my waters that we could beat the Aussies. Possibly the worst of the Southern Hemisphere.

So happy about that! I knew that we were leading and then I saw Dave The Gaffer launch himself in the air, when news filtered through and Yorkie confirmed with a thumbs up. Bravo!

Fair enough - can't argue too much with that.

blimey Ian, let em bask in their glory before trying to stick the knife in.

I was coninced when I saw England lose to teh NZ's a year ago at Twickers that we had the basis of a team capable of taking on the Southern Hemisphere team WHEN IT MATTERS.

We also at Exiles have some excellent youngsters coming through and the future is bright.

We are 80 minutes away from a final 99.99999999% of people on here reconed was shit even suggesting...welll!!!!!!!

I'm not a fan of ten man rugby. Today, it did the job very well and it was great watching the Aussie pack get DESTROYED in every area of the game. But it would be nice to see some running rugby from the back culminating in a few tries.

I know I've probably come across as incredibly harsh on English rugby over the last couple of weeks. The fact is, there's nothing I'd like to see more than England winning another World Cup and I am genuinely pleased that they won today. It's just that I'm commenting on the game objectively rather than subjectively and there are definate areas to improve on, and unfortunately that seems to upset some people :(

I too would love to see some flair in the backs but when was the last time a decent England team wasn't 75% reliant on the forwards. We've lagged behind France, Wales and Ireland on occasions as well as all the southern hemisphere teams for running back play. I am struggling to remember an England side where the backs shone, certainly not at the last W C.

It seems we build our teams this way. I'd love to see it change but any progress we are going to make in the next two weeks will definitley be build around the forwards and Wilko's kicking.

No, that would be fine. It's more the fact that you seem very definite in your condemnation of England('England have no chance whatsoever. You're deluded or blinkered if you think otherwise') and seem to be desperate to find fault and criticise., even if it means contradicting yourself. It's posts like these that are annoying:

"the backs were as bad as they have been for the entire tournament"

"If, of course, the backs hadn't been so strong in defence, we would have lost the game."

So in one post you slag the backs off then in your next one we only one because of how good they were defensively which implies that the rest of the team weren't very good and we somehow fluked our way past the Aussies. Yet that can't be true because somewhere else in another post you say that the pack were immense. I know you've said some positive stuff but it seems to be wrapped in negatives and rather unwilling.

A critique along the lines of...'the pack were immense and really dominated australia while the backs defended well but offered little coming forward. Work still needs to be done if we're to win the tournament'...would, I imagine provoke little,or no, criticism.

I wasn't sticking the knife in! I was BERATING Grendel for not acknowledging the performance.

I watched the whole game today (Bad Fan blah blah blah) and we were superb. OK, it wasn't technically brilliant in places but we did a job - and the backs played a full part in proceedings.

I just hope the management can raise the boys AGAIN next week for what will be a bigger test than today.

COME ON ENGLAND!!!
