I overheard a 1901 worker saying she got £70 in tips on Saturday. Is it protocol to tip the staff? Any NSCers tip them? Who and what do you tip?

Slight veer away from the OPs post but I'm currently in Florida and you tip EVERYTHING over here...from bar staff to bus drivers. £70 is not very much for an evening back home when I heard today that maids can get £200 per day from cleaning hotel rooms in tips alone!

Tipping in the US is fine with me. It's clear cut, ie everything as you point out, and it's their culture. Over here I find its a bit of a muddle.

As I understand it, it's the norm in the US because the wages are lower however it probably does drive up customer service. In this country I only tip if the service is what I expect. If it's poor, I won't and if it is very good I'll be generous. Having said that, I don't think the employees expect everyone to tip so don't fall into the trap of trying to keep up with the Joneses.

poker dealers get 1000s

Some.....my mate was dealt 8,9,10,J,Q all hearts straight up in Caribbean Stud game there....winnings $10,000 (after 30 mins CCTV scrutiny by suits etc)
The dealer made it clear he expected a 1,000 tip for his part. He got $50.
I got $1,000 tip & other friend did, however as part of a 'big win plan' on plane over. My idea!
Dealer was not happy, us 3 were

Tipping is a pain in the ass. Just because the Yanks do it, why do we have to follow suit. Screw them. I'll tell you what gets my goat is this 12% on the cheque in diners. f*** you man. For service ? What they expect, we get the godamn food from the kitchens ourselves.
Hell those bitches make me pissed, holding their hands out all the time. We're English man and we don't want no truck with them dudes and their influences.

He wanted 10% of the winnings - what a twat. I wouldn't have given a penny after being like that.

I dislike tipping if I know it all goes in one big pot, if I like someone I would want them to have the reward as in one establishment a worker told me the managers even expect a cut which is wrong in my book.

for 12% i would happily go to the kitchen and fetch my food. what i've never understood is why we tip the waitress and not the chef or the manager. i imagine in many kitchens the lower chefs probably earn less than the waitresses.

Tips normally get shared out evenly between kitchen and serving staff.
