Can Caine actually act well? I appreciate he is popular, and I like some of his films and his style....but I’m not convinced he’s a good actor. It’s a bit like Arnie. He’s great at playing himself.
Looking at Spall’s body of work I think I actually prefer him. Am I allowed to change my vote?
I really do like Caine in The Ipcress File though.
Spall in life Is Sweet always cracks me up.
Spall is in virtually everything ATM and Caine is very much of his time and therefore is yesterday's man. Bit like me, really! Two brilliant actors, though, but if pushed I'll opt for Caine.
Lots of people have many different views on Caine's best role, weirdly ( or not) I thought he was brilliant in Little Voice (Ray Say) however on most occasions I only see Michael Caine, Spall is a very good actor, I thought his best role was as Turner.
For me, Spall is the better of the two.
Spall is easily the better actor but Caine just seems to be in more of the films that I like. Zulu was the first dvd I bought. The original Italian Job is so enjoyable because of Caine, same with the Harry Palmer films and Get Carter. It's technical ability (Spall) versus entertainment value (Caine) and for me sheer entertainment wins every time
Michael Caine does some terrific stuff and is in some great films - being Michael Caine.
Spall is a rather odd chap but as others have said, he is a brilliant actor with real depth and empathy for a role so he wins hands down in the acting stakes.
