All depends whether we're talking about career greatness or greatness while at The Albion. If the former, Gerry Armstrong should definitely be in there, and dare I say it, Robbie Savage!

Shouldn't it be the best 50 players BASED on how they played at the Albion? And doesn't commitment come into it too?

In which case Paul Clark has too be in there and what about Small? Surely did more for us than Andy Ritchie?

But Andy Ritchie did what he did in the first division and helped Albion to their highest-ever league finish. Difficult one, as is balancing the claims of totally different players in other areas. For example, Hans Kraay was certainly a great character, and well-liked by the fans, but Dennis Mortimer was a superb player, even though we didn't have him for long. Eric Young was a tremendous defender and a great find - and won the FA Cup with Wimbledon - but never made much impression as a personality compared to, say, John Crumplin.

Looks like about 25 strong candidates are going to be left out whatever happens. Keith Dublin, Doug Rougvie, Graham Pearce, Chris Hutchings, Gary O'Reilly - maybe I can persuade them to make it 100 ...

hardly a great, in fact hardly a BHA player.

Played once v Scunthorpe in the FA Cup 1991 , scored a couplein a 3-2 win, and then disappeared back to the Ukraine after not getting a work permit.

: Few men have done more for Brighton and Hove Albion than Charlie Webb, the longest-serving manager. The Irishman was in charge of the team for more than 1,200 games between 1919 and 1947. Webb, an Irishman, lived at Frith Road, Hove, where a plaque has been unveiled in his memory. He first played for Albion at West Ham on Christmas Day, 1908, and scored on his debut. In a career lasting until 1915, he scored 79 goals in 275 matches. Webb served in the First World War. He was captured and imprisoned by the Germans. While he was in captivity, he received a letter from Albion’s directors offering him the post of manager on his release. Webb, remembered by colleagues as a gentleman, built a series of fine Albion sides on a shoestring budget. On match days, all the gate money used to be taken to Frith Road and stored in a safe in the larder because the banks were not open on Saturdays. Webb even sold tickets from the house for cup ties. In September 1949 Webb was honoured with a testimonial match at the Goldstone ground between Arsenal and Portsmouth. He died in 1975 and a tree was planted opposite the ground in his memory.
