Ask him to unravel the Grandfather paradox...

If it were possible to go back in time, a person could travel back in time shoot and kill his own Grandfather while the Grandfather was young... but if the Grandfather was killed, the grandson would no longer exist, so who did the shooting? So if the Grandson no longer exists, he can't go back to shoot his grandfather, so what happens to the grandfather after this time? Does he live? Does he have a grandson....

You get the general idea...

If you walked into a forest and found a tree lying on its side, would it be possible to go back in time to a point where the tree was still standing and listen to see if it made a noise when it fell?

Remember that for those photons of light traveling the speed of light, time stands still. If you think that, if that is the case that time stands still, if you start to slow down from the speed of light, time will begin to move forward again. The tricky thing here is to know that as you keep slowing down, getting farther from the speed of light, time itself begins to move faster. The slower you get, the more time speeds up.

It’s the same as with gravity. The closer you are to a gravity force the more time slows down and the further you get from a gravity source the more time speeds up.

Does this mean that if you were sealed in a completely dark room you would age quicker than someone who wasn't? Similarly, if someone were to live on the moon or somewhere else where gravity is weaker than it is on earth they would age faster than someone on earth? Or if we found a new world to live on that had a stronger gravitational pull than earth would those people living there (seemingly?) live longer than people on earth?

Basically you could whizz around on a near-speed of light spaceship for around 3 months, come back to Earth and you are now 20 Earth years in the future. So that's time travel. But you couldn't go back.

...unless, before you left you anchored one end of a wormhole to Earth and the other end to your spaceship, whizzed around a bit, landed on Earth, wrote down all the Derby winners, slid back down your wormhole and hey presto you're back where you started...

or not. This is where we get into 'grandfather paradox' territory, and like most paradoxes, they're set up to tell us that our theories don't work. But the wormhole is theoretically possible, and special relativity is true, so what gives? Perhaps we're into multiple spawning universes, or the universe has expanded at faster than the speed of light to keep up, or the laws of physics and logic are being bent too much so the whole thing collapses into a black hole.. and now I'm at the limit of what I'm aware of....

If you ever get the chance to sit down with a theoretical physicist , or astro-physicist and talk about this stuff, it blows your mind

Don't know about the first, don't think so, you are not moving any faster or slower and the movement of other objects doesn't affect your speed, just your perception of speed.

Photons themselves exist in a timeless world, they move through space, not through time. We move mainly through time, and only a bit through space. However we observe photons to move through time, i.e. light takes 7 minutes to get to Earth from the Sun from our perspective, even though from the photon's perspective time hasn't moved, just space. Its all a bit of a headfuck.

For the latter two, kind of. You age at the same speed as everyone else, but relatively speaking, you're younger.

I find it interesting that people use this as proof that you cannot travel backwards in time.

Surely all it actually proves is that it may well be possible to travel back through time, but throughout his entire future existence, man will never figure out how to do it...

If you could go back, would you go back to just after the birth of Hitler say or any other mass muderer and re-write history by smothering them ?

Or, would you go back for personal gain ?

Can you bring money back with you ?

.........................

What about going back to find out who the Ripper was ?
Pisses me off that one.

So Einsteins law of relativity is a manipulation of words of time travel?? He hadn't said it's possible via any wormholes as mentioned by others, he's saying that if you could travel faster than the speed of light away from earth, say in a year, you would view earth if you had good enough equipment in the past?? But in reality this isn't time travel as all together everyone will be a year older, it will just be perceived that there is a difference, like watching paused tv.

Or have i totally missed it?!
