It has always been one of my beefs in that there is a european monetary unit why if Europe is so good not a european language and Eurovision shows what that language should be as most contries speak it as a 2nd language. Do we have any financial input into Eurovision which makes it essential for our continuance in a competition we wouldnt win again if we had Take That or Adele write and sing a song because of the voting for each other.

We don't win for the simple fact that all our entries are shit.
You might think "well this year's wasn't shit" but although it didn't come last, it was still only just another contender.
Plus, everyone thinks Britain is a hotbed of musical genius - which it is on the main - but we don't put forward anything decent for this song contest, therefore we are selling the event short.

All true. That's why we won't win, and some other country (deservedly) comes first.
We have no divine right to win anything by being shit.

Same with football.

I think its kind of ironic that we moan about Cyprus giving Greece 12 points, yet say nothing when we give Ireland 12.

I thought the voteing was 'about' right this year. Dont think the right song won, but unlike Graham Norton I thought Italy was a good second place.

Maybe, just maybe countries vote for other coutries which have a song which is 'similar' to thier own? Or like Norton said last night, they vote for the acts they know or recognise.

Or if you want to get votes in Eurovision ...... write a decent song and get some decent performers. Sure the neighbours will still vote for each other, but we'd pick up enough second and third points to mount a creditable challenge. At least this year though we were bland as opposed to shit.

exactly and thats what a lot of countries do. just because centre of the world britain hasnt heard of them doesnt mean they are not big time on the continent. we think we are wheeling out the big guns by sending f***ing Blue.

the country that produced the beatles stones led zep etc etc etc cannot win a pop competition against people who are getting paid in FOOD. mental isnt it.

Agreed. Also I find some of the whingeing quite embarrassing. Apparently we always enter brilliant songs performed by brilliant singers and the only reason people don't vote for us is because there is some pan-European anti-British conspiracy based on jealousy and spite. And even if the songs ARE shit people should still vote for us because 'we won the war'. Bloody foreigners.

Agreed. If anything it underlines how a lot of people in this country do not understand how some areas of Europe work or its history. Lacking a physical border means we often lack the understanding how this arbitrary line can divide single ethnic groups and the further east you travel in Europe the more complicated this gets particularly in the countries that were formed after the break up of the USSR and Yugoslavia. On top of that you have groups of countries that are united by similar ethnicity and language (Estonia and Finland are a good example) as well as religion (European muslim as well as Greek and Russian Orthodox countries), shared histories (Iceland only severed ties with Denmark in 1944, Finland was part of Russia until 1917, Bosnia was part of the Ottoman Empire run by Turkey until 1878). Part of the reason I actually enjoy watching the voting in Eurovision is to see where the connections are.

Since we last won in 1997 we have sent a series of weak entries usually of nobodies who cannot sing or washed up has beens who haven't taken it seriously and have been marked accordingly. Though Blue are has beens they at least had a semblance of a following in Europe and unlike other years actually went round Europe in the run up of the competition to promote their entry. Though the song wasn't that much the scores at least proved that taking something seriously will at least improve youur placing.

I think that was a gimme considering how mind numbingly cringeworthy the British public "like" those two GOONS
.

Plus the factor of not being able to vote for your own song, but people who live overseas can do from the country they live in, how many Eastern Europeans have moved around for work. In the case of Jedward, apart from their undeniable popularity, how many Irish people live in the UK and are able to vote for their song...bloody thousands of them, I should know, I have one as a parent!

What made me laugh last night was the audible boo-ing during the voting, when some of the predictable votes came through. There is no doubt that the voting has improved since they changed the process slightly, it isn't perfect, but sods law is that they would get a replacement designed and approved by FIFA!

Not into countries but about 20 regions designated as countries. Then all enter the Eurovision and vote for each like those bloody Eastern Europeans have done!!!

Sussex, Cantium (Kent), Wessex, Atrebates (Thames Valley and London), Mercia (Brummies etc.), Essex, East Anglia (Iceni), Devon, in the United States of England, Cornwall and Wales and Brittany and Isle of Man in the United States of Wales, and the United States of Lancashire and United States of Yorkshire, and the rest in the United States of Scotland. The Isle of Wight is actually part of Kent like Calais. Fecamp is part of Sussex. Shetlands will join the Viking Empire. Ireland would be divided up into the Welsh and Vikings and they can fight it out forever.

I think the border (disputed) might be at Purley. Unlike normal territorial disputes nobody actually wants the land. Crawley will be a frontier town with all the immigrants repatriated.

This all exactly the point I am making though. I'm not saying the other countries are cheating but just they have split themselves up whilst retaining the sane culture. Effectively where Yugoslavia and Czech Republic previously were two countries they are now five. And Russia is made up of god knows how many. So you end up with a natural vote across to shared cultures, like us and Ireland. Unfortunately though we only have one other "us". We can never win again because of this.

Actually I disagree. However much you dislike Blue for once we actually sent an entry who took the competition seriously, toured Europe to promote their entry, and were also able to perform on the night. The net result was a significant improvement on our scoring though the tendency was to pick up 4s, 5s and 6s meant a mid table finish. In previous years we have been relying on the Irish to give us the bulk of our final total and everywhere else ignored us because the entries we sent were dire sung by nobodies from talent shows and music colleges or were songs voted in by a public who viewed Eurovision through some kitsch like spectacles which believed nobody in the competition took it seriously. Therefore because the rest of Europe did take it seriously, did send artists that were known on mainland Europe, did tour a variety of countries to promote their entry and who were able to sing live on stage in front of a huge crowd, we sunk without a trace. Blue's entry this year rectified some of that but lacked an essential ingredient, namely a decent catchy song, and we haven't had one of those since 1996 and "ooh aah just a little bit".

But after last years dogfight with relegation aren't you pleased we achieved mid table mediocrity. Perhaps Gus and Tanno should enter as a duet next year and we could be fighting it out near the top!
