It's being like that that has got us where we are. Look at the amount of goals we score compared to other seasons. Under this system it's impossible to have both.

I don't expect the world from a team which I've watched from the bottom of the league to the tops. This is just the way we play, I don't think any other system would be better.

Last seasons tactics were very Potteresque. This season is full De Zerbi

They were only Potteresque during the poor early run.

We can't ignore the haemorrhage of goals

First things first. Two proper full backs. Forget this Lamptey / Hinsh half full back, half winger thing. Let's have a proper back 4, with proper defenders. Like Veltman.

Second. Central defenders don't need to be stepping into midfield. Van Hecke is not John Stones. I'm sure he's been asked to step up but this is a failed experiment. Let's just have a flat back 4.

Third. Midfielder cover. We need at least one to stay in range of covering if we get turned over. Gilmour and Gross, just don't think like this and can't get back. We should go through the pain barrier with Baleba and rotate the other two.

Or play Baleba alongside them both. It’s mad to me that we never speak about how we have gone from having Gross, Mac and Caicedo in midfield last year, to only Gross and Gilmour and wonder why two players aren’t doing the job as well as three.

Yep.

No reason why we can't play Gross behind the forwards and have Gilmour and Baleba as the pivot.

Last season there was anything but a poor early run! in fact, it was brilliant! We wouldn't have got 6th. place without it!
I was referring to the early RDZ matches. They were a bit Potterish and it wasn't until Chelsea that it all got underway.

The tactics were ok all the time we were scoring for fun. Now we can’t score for sh&t. A rethink is desperately required.

I really do think this needs to happen. We shouldn't be getting beaten 3-0 or 4-0 on the regular; it's embarrassing.

We need to be more direct in our attacking play and, for our defence, I don't know what needs to happen but something needs to change soon.

Starting a revolution from my bed
RDZ’s problem is that he’s still picking an attacking system that only works if he has March, Mitoma and Pedro available. I have no problem with being attacking, but if your three best attacking players are unavailable then it would make sense to be pragmatic and set up a bit more defensively.

The last time we played well against a decent team (I.e ignore Sheff U and Palace) was Spurs at home, and that was mostly because it was a basketball game with two managers happy to play ridiculously wide open football. Before that? Marseille at home with Mitoma and Pedro playing.

I’m genuinely starting to worry he hasn’t got an answer to this issue, which isn’t the best reflection on his adaptability and pragmatism, but nor is it a great reflection on the club’s recruitment for him. The failure to get a proper winger in January which his system so desperately needs, alongside needing (since the summer) a duel-winning, ground covering defensive midfielder who is ready for this level of football (unfortunately not yet Baleba) massively impacts us.

RDZ is mostly at fault for recent performances, but he hasn’t been handed a particularly balanced squad where his lynchpin positions are prioritised, and of course we’ve been brutally unlucky with injuries.

Spot on bud
Settled back four with players that can defend is absolutely vital and,as far as I’m concerned, should be the first thing that is established in building your team along with the keeper
