At League 1 level yes. He has also shown he takes a good penalty too but im not for keeping him. He just hasnt got what it takes at champ level. Id loan him out!!

Do you not think he should be given a chance to prove himself in the Championship, playing as a striker?

Another striker like Paynter do you mean? Strikers that score 20 goals in League 1 and then continue to score in the Championship don't grow on trees.

I take your point, but JFC has excelled since being promoted to the first team, early days but who's to say if he had of started the games Barnes did we could be in a even healthier position.

Gus made a mistake signing Paynter but I would expect a half decent loan signing to contribute more.

JFC is a midfielder not a striker. The midfield should be helping out the strike force and this is where we have missed Bennett.

Had a very poor game Saturday, but did well last year, ok this year despite being played out of position. His work defensively has arguably been more impressive than his work up front. I would give him another 2 year contract as I see him as 'work in progress'. A good squad player for sure.

Barnes has generally played either in a withdrawn role from CMS or on the left. Maybe a more natural midfielder would have contributed more than Barnes.

They probably would seeing as Barnes is a striker. He has been played out of position which is hardly his fault.

For what it's worth:

Barnes 1828mins, 45 shots, 7 goals (1 goal every 6.43 shots or every 261min)
CMS 2609mins, 54 shots, 7 goals (1 goal every 7.71 shots or every 378min)
Hoskins 244min, 7 shots, 1 goal (1 goal every 7 shots or every 244mins)
Paynter 607mins, 6 shots, 0 goals (1 goal every ? shots, or every ?mins)

Barnes did well last season when Poyet was rotating him ,murray and Wood.He often came off the bench when he wasn't picked and did well.If he is not played up front with another forward you might as well not bother.

Barnes has a lot of potential, but he does need to play to realise that potential, and i worry that he'll see little game time if we have a new striker and hoskins fit. Reluctantly, perhaps the op is right and he should move on?

Has there been any talk of contract extensions ? if we do not tie him up now it is unlikely he will stay in the summer and we lose him for nothing (like Murray). Has to be worth a year extension just for sell on value.

And at the time, was better than Wood ... more tenacious, brave & mobile when we didn't have the ball.

Confidence shot to bits @ present.
