I was surprised when the board went up for as many as 5 minutes. It didn't feel like there were many stoppages in the second half. A couple of VAR checks for the offsides and substitutions but I was expecting 3, maybe 4 minutes added on.

The first VAR check took at least a min, which surprised me as it was clear to the naked eye he was offside. The second VAR check was combined with a further delay for a substitution so probably took 2 mins. That’s at least 3 mins before the other second half subs and any time wasting at goal kicks etc is taken into account. 5 mins felt about right, then their keeper took his time over a couple of goal kicks in added on time so I wasn’t surprised the ref played longer.

Yeah, exactly. And there could be a relatively easy technical solution, which automatically adds on the amount lost when play is stopped for an injury or when a substitution takes place, plus when the ref indicates a player is time-wasting (perhaps a default 30 seconds, every time the ref signals). The total amount is added on to the 90, plus any extra stoppages etc during additional time. A beep happens in the ref's ear when time is up, at which point he stops the game, irrespective of where the ball is at the time. Bound to be some controversial moments, such as had the ball crossed the line before the beep, but technology can solve that.

I was surprised that he played about a further 90 seconds after the Penalty was scored.
But that kind of proves the point, that time wasn't up, when the Pen was given, doesn't it?

I thought the pen would be the last kick off of game. Like you I was surprised he played so much time after they kicked off again.

I have long believed that 30 secs is allegedly added on for each substitution, is that actually in the laws? If so there would have been almost 5 mins just for the subs alone.

The 30 seconds is advisory not compulsory which seems to baffle a lot of people that `i know. As someone else said, there are stoppages during added on time like subs, VAR etc.

I think the ref had warned the goalie for time-wasting and added extra time into the extra time accordingly.

He booked the goalie for timewasting on the penalty.

I like what they have in rugby union where they stop the clock for injuries and substitutions, then when they reach 80 minutes the final play in progress is allowed to complete until the ball goes dead. I think this would be better at the top level, especially when there is a prolonged stoppage in extra-time, so no one has any idea how long is left.

I also think it would add to the excitement, as with no added time you wouldn't just get the goalkeeper going up for a corner, but potentially becoming the 11th outfielder for the last minute of action.

That was outrageous really. 95 mins on the clock when the pen was awarded. There weren't any additional stoppages in injury time, so he should have blown up straight after the pen. He seems to have added on 90 seconds for goal celebrations - but time was already up. Imagine if they'd equalised..

It felt like 'sympathy time'.
