Time for a book recommendations thread

"My father and other working class football heroes" by John Imlach. About his dad Stewart who was a first divison player in the 50's and '60's. Not just a different age almost a different planet to the Premiership.

Have just started reading Split Images by Elmore Leonard. Can highly recommend both Leonard and James Ellroy (LA Confidential, Big Nowhere, White Jazz etc), the (current) doyens of American crime writing. While they both feature intricate plotting, Leonard's crime capers are much lighter than Ellroy's novels, which are mostly about the dark underbelly of LA in the '40s and '50s and are pretty cynical and brutal.

Can also recommend the late Michael Dibdin's series about the Venetian detective, Aurelio Zen. Much slower paced than Ellroy or Leonard, but fiendishly plotted and lots of Italian political intrigue.

[BI'm now reading Damned Utd by David Peace, all about Brian Clough's 44 day reign as manager of Leeds Utd. 50 pages in I'm hooked. [/B]

Another endorsement. The best book I have read in some time.
