I'm pretty sure this was due to restrictions put on ground capacity. Not exactly sure due to hazy memory but I think there were restrictions imposed due to safety concerns.

It was the 80's we would get 14000 when Arsenal would get 18000 and palace 4000-6000. Strewth. If you dont know that Brighton like every club would add an extra 8,000 to 15,000 plus on the average gate because its "the best league" then oh my. Even palace have found 23000 to turn up to watch them in the top flight and all they got in the championship was between 9000 to 14000 paying punters plus people who didnt pay to get in or who took kids season tickets as it was allowed on evening games.

With the 900 for segregation I make that 2600 empties plus any held back, plus any of the 2090 brim don't need, plus any empties on the school shelf.
Sticking with 28500. Sure with the weather looking good a few dozen more will be shifted come kick off

This shows what most of us should but dont seem to know:-
1. Large crowds when a half decent lower league side was put together in the mid to late 70's.
2. Brighton spent 79 to 83 in the top flight. All crowds had dipped and that is why "we didnt sell out in the top flight"" and wehy this is the most pointless statistic trotted out about the Albion, along wioth attendances at Gillingham and Withdean.
3. Palace gates I should have said, they did get gets of 4000 to 6000 but yes the average was around 8000 for them around 1984. As for late 80s, they were getting gates of between 14000 to 20,000 and they had Ian Wright in the side, went to a cup final and also finished 3rd or 4th. By the late 80's the decline had well and truly set in down the Albion and they found themselves back in the 3rd division with Kevin Bremner up front therefore with crowds lower in the 80s plus the decline it doesnt take a genius to work out why its taken so long for the Albion to recover..
