Wandering Seagull
Tomorrow sees the start of the season for my team here in Salta, Gimnasia y Tiro, blue & white stripes of course!
It's a "classico", ie a derby, against Central Norte (black & white stripes) who were found guilty of match fixing in the last game of last season when having already been relegated, they threw the last game to prevent another Salta side from reaching the promotion play-offs. It looks like they start this season with a 6 point deduction because of it, but that's yet to be confirmed.
Anyway, the match is at 2215 tomorrow night in a neutral stadium on the edge of the city, simply because Central's stadium makes Withdean look like Old Trafford!
Tickets finally go on sale this afternoon! Can you imagine any derby match in the UK starting to sell tickets the day before the game.
I'm not expecting great football but the city rivalry should be good. This is in the fourth tier of Argentine football. Despite being the third city of Argentina, Salta has 3 "professional" sides, one in the third tier and two in the fourth tier.
Gimnasia y Tiro are hoping for a better season. They are the biggest club in Salta with the best stadium (both other teams use it for big games), but GyT avoided relegation to the minor regional leagues thanks to a penalty shootout in a promotion/relegation play-off.
I might wear the blue Palookaville shirt as it's probably a safer bet than wandering the streets in the stripes!
