Dave - have you read Imperium by Robert Harris? Superb book

Yes......did you see the Rome Series on the TV. The lawyer Marcus Tillius Cicero( the hero/anti-hero in Imperium) was featured a lot, which I found was very interesting

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
Julian Rathbone - "Kings of Albion", and "The Last English King"
Peter Carey - "True History of the Kelly Gang"
Lothar-Gunther Buchheim - "Das Boot" ("The Boat"), but get the English translation unless you read German.

Agree with Hiney, Imperium is fantastic.

Get into the Michael Dobbs books on Churchill. Enough fiction to make it brilliant and interesting to read, enough fact to make you rethink his role and the state of Britain in WWII

Archangel by Robert Harris. An intelligent historical thriller about tracking down Stalin's notebook. An amazing expose into soviet union and the monsters that still lurk post 1989. 100% recommended. I know that this is his most respected work but havent read anything else by Harris

I enjoyed Winter in Madrid by CJ Sansom - which is set in the Spanish Civil War, as is The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon which gets two thumbs up from me.
:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Try the "DCI Roy Grace" novels by Peter James, 4 so far and all set in Brighton and around.

For historical novels try any of the "Flashman" novels by George Macdonald Fraser - all are rollicking good reads.

....Have I mentioned "My father and other working class football heroes" by Gary Imlach on this site before (actually lots of times). Not fiction but a truly splendid book IMHO.

Anything by James Lee Burke. Especially the Detective Dave Robicheaux series (17 books in all and still producing to high quality). Read them in order starting with The Neon Rain and work your way through. Tremendous.
