There's a new brewery in Colyton, Devon called Dark Place Brewery.

The name conjures up all sorts of connotations like black beer, depression, hangover and alcoholism.

Whoever thought up that name wants certifying.

More new stuff in Worthing...

#1 - The Whiskey Rooms (a pub despite the name) - https://www.facebook.com/whiskeyroomsworthing/

#2 - Fox & Finch (at Thomas a Becket, but not open yet from what I can see). - https://www.facebook.com/thefoxandfinchalehouse/

After visiting the Grizzly Bear and Broodsteed the other night with Papa Lazarou, we then went to visit the Whiskey Rooms, but it was closed.

Wandering further towards the pedestrianised part of Montague Street we happened across Wax Cactus in a converted butchers shop. The landlord told us he'd been on the lookout for a butchers as it makes for a great micro-pub as the beer can be stored in the butcher's fridge with taps drilled through the wall - and that's exactly what he's done.

He also run the Wax Cactus cafe next door, although it sounds as though he wants to move that on to a dedicated chef to run as they see fit.

They had a decent range of both beers and ciders, including lots of local stuff, and they also specialise in tequila. A nice addition to the west end of town, with the Whiskey Rooms and Anchored both close by.

EDIT: They also have live acts on from time to time, with our very own attila there on the 9th October.

Was going to post this in the Branch Tavern thread, but perhaps it deserves its own. With most pub-related threads on NSC being about places closing down, here's some better news about three places (all craft beer focused) that are opening soon...

THE NEW UNITY - opens today
The former Branch Tavern on London Road has been concentrating on the sports bar angle in its press releases, but their recent job ads on Facebook also emphasised their craft beer range (something I assume the rough 'n' ready Branch didn't really do).

Went in here a couple of weeks ago, ordered a Lagunitas, barmaid said, oh by the way that is £6 per pint, are you sure, I said wow ok, I'll have that IPA instead, she poured it and said "£5.80 please".

Why the warning on £6 but not £5.80!

Understand why all the other punters were on the Kronie.

Might as well just put a sign up warning all the punters they're in a pub in Brighton.

I'm all for choice, but wow, this is an explosion.
Call me a cynic, but rather like the proliferation of 'artisan' gins often selling at much higher prices than the 'brands', I do wonder that, in some instances, a hell of a lot of drinkers may be paying rather a lot of dosh for a mediocre product that somewhere features the word 'craft' along the way.
Anyway, no harm done; each to their own and it is good to see pubs and bars opening rather than closing.

Cheers:drink:

If you don’t know much about the scene you will almost certainly get stung. Small brewers with a good product will generally cost more due to economies of scale and the simple fact better and/more ingredients and time spent making it (eg dry hopping, Barrel aging ). But where you will definitely get stung is with all the commercially mass made beers which are now prefixed with the term craft and priced to match those in my previous sentence.

I wouldn't disagree with that.
Good beer is very close to my heart and as someone who spent almost the whole of my working life in the brewing industry, so it should be.
In the good old days, Draught Bass was always dry hopped and was a great beer.
Out of interest, what are some of your favourite German beers?

Of the big brands Augustine, which basically only has two beers outside of Munich, has a lovely standard helles and a slightly sweeter premium version called Edelstof. Both are good but their lesser seen pils is exactly how I like a pils: crisp, dry, nice balance of bitter and grassy notes. Rothaus Pils is bloody good as well and won a UK v Germany blind tasting competition I organized some time ago. Incidentally we ran three tastings and Meantime won twice. A nice go-to is Flensburger. These are the traditional and local breweries of which Berlin doesn’t really have much of a scene.

But, an up and coming craft brewer is Fuerst und Wiacek. They concentrate on IPAs and pales but boy are they good. They are now starting to hit the international scene and they have been spotted in Brighton. The owners are former brewers from Chicago’s Half Acre and Beavertown. It’s clear from those CVs why they are so good. They went from 0 to being sold in Mikkeller in 6 months. In my mind that’s impressive.

Ahh, Edelstof; my wife's favourite beer that we enjoyed in the Augustiner Haus in Munich a few years back!
I'll have to look out for the Fuerst und Wiacek beers you mention.
Prost!
