[Football] Thoughts on the ref today?

Barnes has never been shy of using his physique to make an impact. Remember him putting the keeper in the net when he came on as a sub at the Amex!

It'll be interesting to see where the ball was when Barnes starts to make his lunge towards it. If it's loose, the striker's probably entitled to go for it.

But I'll watch it again on MOTD later and will happily revise my call on it if I'm wrong.

Gudmundsson’s yellow card challenge could well have been a red IMO.

Why was this not referred to VAR?

Thought he was pretty poor tbh. Burnley were rough throughout, elbows, body checking etc, and the ref gave our players no protection whatsoever. Meanwhile Burnley players were going down at the slightest touches and getting every decision.

As I said on the match day thread before the game started, it seemed strange that a local referee was allocated the match. Every single 50/50 decision went there way. Burnley would have been relegated a long time ago if referees weren’t scared of Dyche.

Local? He's from Manchester. There are 5 other PL clubs as close or closer than Burnley.

Listening on the radio I was sure Burnley would get a sending off or a VAR investigation.
JC and Warren were wincing at the replays.
Worst ones I remember them commenting on were maupay being booted in the shins,McAllister being hit on the jaw,the back of the head and the cheek and players arriving late on Sanchez a couple of times to clatter him.
It's a shame because Burnley seemed to be playing good football and working well tacticaly so why do they need to play dirty? and more to the point why wasn't the ref doing anything about it?

Did you notice Macaliister being battered almost to the point of concussion due to elbows directly to his face/head? Three times!
All ignored by the ref.

My biggest beef was not with the ref but the linesmen.

Someone is going to get injured trying to defend a shot from a player that is offside but not yet been flagged. They are leaving it ridiculously long to flag, we already have VAR without more of this sh1t.

I thought he was appalling, some of the Burnley elbows were yellow maybe even red card challenges. Gave nearly all the 50/50s to the thugs too

I thought he was wonderful, gave us feck all but what do you expect, VAR was sensational, Spanish Archers everywhere,

I thought he refed it more like an FA cup game or local derby than a PL match. It probably favoured Burnley more than our soft southern pansies, although take nothing away from Burnley who I thought played us as well as anyone this season.

Don’t know about the ref, but Barnes is a dirty ****.

Yeah Barnes really pissed me off today. Too slow and not in the same class as our defenders who had him in their pocket all game so he resorted to standard Burnley thuggery. Vydra was much, much better and more of a danger to us.

When you’ve played the game you know, and one of those challenges from Barnes on Sanchez was totally late and unnecessary. Austrian prick.

Nothing more than that, but nothing less either.

The only blatant uncontestable mistake was the push in Dunk's back that resulted in a free kick against him!
No excuses there, that was terrible from both ref and lino.

The other contentious decisions weren't cut and dried in my opinion.
Gudmonssen's challenge on Connolly wasn't good, but a red would have been harsh.
Barnes' two challenges on Sanchez were genuine attempts to get the ball in my opinion.
The frequent elbows on Mac Argie didn't look that bad in normal speed, it was only when seen in slow motion that they raised eyebrows ... and the officials were judging in normal speed of course.

Some very cynical challenges unpunished and gave them every 50/50. We didn’t play well but he didn’t help at all. Nasty niggly team ramped up by a manger that seems to enjoy their snide antics.

I don't remember it if they were.

In fact, if VAR did look at them surely that vindicates the ref's decisions and makes him look more competent, not less?

VAR looks at everything as it happens. But given how shit the refs are they not suddenly going to be any better looking at a screen. You only have to listen to Walton for a minute to realise how poor they are. It is no wonder none of our refs go to the World Cup. Poor quality.

No major errors but was very inconsistent with his decisions on nightly fouls.

There is very little excuse for studs up or elbows in my opinion. You can be strong and fight for the ball whilst taking care not to put your elbow in another players face. There was way too much of it today in my opinion. They got away with a lot. The ref was bad, but thankfully nothing that would/should have changed the result to be fair. Although I’m convinced it played a big part in Burnley’s ascendancy in the second half. They really wore a number of our players down, but that’s on us. We should’ve been tougher than that. I don’t think it’s a legitimate, tactical approach to be proud of personally, I’d rather see us play beautiful, flowing, skilful football than resort to cheap tactics.

The referee was very poor, I don't think Burnley are a dirty team but they are a very physical team and given the green light by the referee and linesmen they played to the whistle, which I hear you say nothing wrong with that, well in my opinion with so many games in such a short space of time together with the conditions it's very cold very wet and heavy ideal conditions for injuries.
A number of times the silly offside rule allowed play to continue which could have resulted in a serious injury referees have a duty of care and must take conditions into account that's all
