To sum up, Villa keeper Martinez was booked during the UCL game v Lille. The game went to pens and Martinez played his usual role in front of the Lille fans, finger to mouth shushing them etc. He was warned of his conduct and then booked.
In theory this was a second yellow but it was later clarified that cards shown in the game do not count in the penalty kicks.
Did you know this? I've an ex ref friend who didn't.

Nope. Was laughing my head off at the telly but then couldn't work out why he hadn't been sent off. Commentators were completely unaware until someone told them in their earpiece.

Surely if yellow cards don't carry over to the penalty shootout then neither should red (apparently they do).

Not so much the red carrying over as you can only use the players on the field of play at the final whistle.
Here's another thought. Martinez now has two yellow cards, does he miss the next game?

Fair point.

He actually has three for the tournament which is an instant one match ban. Sky Sports are saying UEFA are discussing whether he should receive that punishment or not. Can't see what there is to discuss to be honest.

Seems Emery and the Villa players didn’t know about it either.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery thought Emiliano Martinez had been sent off in a chaotic penalty shootout against Lille before the goalkeeper made the save that sent his side through to their first major European semi-final since 1982 .https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/68840324

It makes the rules about penalties even more stupid. As it is refs don't do anything about keepers randomly walking around, not being ready trying to talk to the taker. Now they can do this take the piss even more. And they don't seem to want to do anything about people scuffing up penalty shots in normal time which should be a straight red

I'm clearly in a tiny minority here, in that I actually DID know about the yellow rule - that he wouldn't be sent off. He really should have got the shoot-out yellow earlier - when he came 12 yards out of his goal to unnecessarily pick the ball up, from the feet of the first Lille taker. Fact is, (and clearly HE knew the rule) he was going to deliberately continue to be a **** until he got a card - all premeditated and all part of his performance. The bloke is an absolute weapon - but he's very good it it all.

Here's another thought. Martinez now has two yellow cards, does he miss the next game?

Ooh. Now THIS I don't know! That would be f***ing HILARIOUS if it turns out to be the case 🙏

Nope, and I was so pleased when he got the second yellow only to then be puzzled why he wasn't on his way (much like basically everyone else)

Seems a stupid rule TBH

Was unaware myself. I now wonder that if a keeper was sent off for collecting 2 cards during the shoot out (unlikely but....) what happens then?

I didn't know the rule. But I would have booked him at the 1st opportunity as you point out. Even after his booking he was still trying things during the shootout. Give him a second and get him out of it

He should now have a one match ban - cant see what's to talk about

The dull part of the south coast
There are certain players I absolutely detest. Sock boy Grealish is one, Bruno Fernandes is another on the list, Tarkowski because he’s a snide thug. Add to that Pickford and his dramatic throwing himself to the floor clutching the ball to waste even more time than previously. But the absolute pinnacle of piss taking shithousery goes to Martinez. An absolute knobend of everything that makes me seeth during a game. I hope, I really sincerely do, that he gets sent off when we play Villa in a few weeks time, preferably after committing a couple of absolute howlers in letting in a goal or more.
