I said a near identical thing on another thread but it was largely ignored because for some weird reason people really rate O'Neil.

I don't know if I 'really rate' MArtin O'Neill but his achievements and success are the match of any of the English candidates.

He took Wycombe from the conference to the play-offs of what is now league one.

He took Leicester to the premierleague and left them a top half of the table team. He won the league cup twice and took Leicester into Europe.

He won everything the scottish league has to offer, had some great nights with Celtic in the Champions league. He got them to the final of the UEFA cup where he was beaten by Jose Mourinho's Porto, who, incidentally, went on to win the Champions league the following season.

He's had success at every level of the British game and has numerous European campaigns under his belt. He has experience of managing one of the biggest clubs in Europe where success is not only expected but demanded. He mixes passion, motivation, discipline and tactical knowledge. And he's had international experience as a player.

Compared to the English managers on the shortlist, I'd say he's the standout candidate.

Spot on. O'Neill, Scolari or Coppell should be the short list
