Am I the only one left deeply in despair to learn the shortlist is reckoned to be just big Sam, Curbs, O'Neill and bookies favourite McClaren?

Seriously, that is f***ing shit.

O'Neill is the only one with a half-decent CV and he's the only one who isn't English.

If McClaren gets the job as the bookies seem to fear then there really is something very wrong. Middlesbrough have lost 15 premiership games so far this season and yet their spending is on a par with teams like Liverpool and Spurs.

McClaren has never managed a team in the Champions League and his current Uefa cup run has been subject to good fortune on more than one occasion.

I like Allardyce and Curbishley but I just don't think their records make them deserving of such a big job just yet

Boro have spent a hell of a lot more than spurs.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
His net spending since taking over is £48.95m

He has spent £54.55m and sold on £5.6m worth of players

*Just for arguments sake...

In that same period Spurs have spent £66.95m in the same period, but recouped £20.65m making their spending a net of £46.3m

Don't let it be Allardyce.

He looks like that cartoon dog. Can't remember what it was called.

Liverpool won the Champions League with their fair slice of luck. In fact, almost everyone who wins something has to have a certain amount of luck. Napoleon didn't want his generals to be good, he wanted them to be lucky.

Point is, McLaren has got his team into two major cup semi-finals this season, has experience of the international set-up, and just as importantly, being England manager means not only does your role involve being an coach, tactician and motivator, you also have to be a diplomat. You are, after all, in just about the highest profile position any head of your nation's sport could be, and McLaren does appear to 'tick those boxes' in a way that certainly Allardyce doesn't.

Ramsey's record to becoming England manager was one league championship. Greenwood's was one FA Cup and one Cup-Winners' Cup 12 years before he got the job. Taylor, Hoddle, Keegan - some silverware in the lower divisions, but not much else. Managerial success does not necessarily qualify you for England managerial status - and nothing, aside from previous experience can prepare for the actual job itself. It's an entirely different beast altogether.

In other words, you are not comparing like with like.

Someone needs to send that press release to Leeds! He was on a Ridsdale special contract and as such we only got £450k payment. Gah.

All four candidates are very poor - O'Neill best choice but don't think he is up for it at all.

But has made the funds through selling, which (no offence starry) is the way to do it unlike Leeds

When you're bent over a barrel you don't have much choice but to take what the vultures are offering.

I thought half the prices you paid for some of the players, especially Seth Johnson, were inflated even back then.

Yep Keano, Robbo and Lennon - change from 10 million

We were at a wedding with Paul two weeks ago, Lucy was bridesmaid.

You are welcome to the later two but would have liked to have kept Robbie.
