The debate has been running for quite a while, about the 'cheapening' of gongs to gain populist support. Paul Collingwood and the Ashes springs instantly to mind.

The achievements of SIR Steven Redgrave, DAME Kelly Holmes may well be eclipsed, by the likes of Becky Addlington, and Mo Farrah, Ben Ainslie.
SIR Chris Hoy may well improve still further.

I think everyone that won in Bejing, got something, so where does it end?

Naturally I've not even mentioned HRH Wiggo, who's lifetime achievements seem to overshadow Dame Kelly.

What if Murray had won?

There's a possibility of GB becoming a force in international sport, with the obvious exception of football, Queenie could run out of medals.

Should there be a 'sporting greatness' sub honour?

No-one should get a sporting gong until after they have retired, so their career can be judged overall.
David Gower didn't get his OBE until he had finished test cricket and was awarded it, quite rightly for "services to cricket" throughout his career.
Collingwood got one for scoring (IIRC) seven runs just because the team won the ashes and took stick for it , rather devaluing an award which, if given for the same reason as Gower, would have been seen as well deserved.

I could get the nod for his charitable work, which wouldn't be too extreme.
He's probably nearly as deserving as Craig Bellamy.

There's always going to be a debate about who deserves to get 'honours', not everyone gets what they deserve and some get more. Going on what's been given out in the past then there is no question that Wiggo should be knighted. I was always angry that the late great John Barry (film & tv composer) only received an O.B.E. and not a knighthood while 'friends' of political parties who 'donate' money get gongs by the dozen.
