This hoofball game we played last night. Blame the keeper or Gus?

I had a conversation with my mate on the train home last night about the hoofball. I think it could be down to Harper not being able to or feel comfortable with tippy-tappy with the defenders. I don't recall a single tippy tappy-like pass last night.

My mate though quite rightly pointed out that Gus would give the instructions and would have surely sanctioned the hoof ball. I wonder if Gus has sacrificed the tippy-tappy for a more all round secure keeper. Granted, we didn't play long ball against West Ham but I don't recall much tippy-tappy there either. Personally, I would rather Ankergren was back in the first team in that case.

What do you reckon?

There is no doubt that because of the way we play integrating a goalkeeper will take longer, he does more and passes the ball more. And Ankergren was good at that. It was the flapping and the 20-yarders that did for him.

I think from Gus's reaction last night you have to assume he hasn't sanctioned any hoofball!

There was - Harper tapped it to Dunk, who tapped it to Bridcutt, who fell over. Then Nolan tapped it into the (nearly) empty net.

Harper`s played three games so far and looked very at ease in our goal, in fact he`s had nothing to do in barely any of the games.

He has been trying to play football but last night i would blame the outfield players totally, although you have to give Watford credit as they didnt let us settle, just a bloody awful night at the office in my mind.

I would agree, but Harper was quite tippy-tappy (I hate that phrase) in the first couple of games. Last night he seemed to just boot it as long as he could every time.

They tried tippy tappy for the first 15 minutes last night. The result was giving the ball away time after time and Watford really should of been 2 up. I think it was then that they started to play hoofball.

Another thing, why can't we seem to take a throw on properly? Takes 20-30 seconds for players to realise they have to run into space to get the ball.

Ankergren cost us a win against Leeds due to his ridiculous late hoof. He also used to do that brainless endless tippy-tappy triangle with Elphick and El-Abd most of last season that always ended in a hoof and some dullards mistook for a passing game. Ankergren has previous form as a serial hoofer. Personally I'd rather a keeper who exudes an air of calm control and doesn't flap at crosses or randomly punch instead of catching. Which means I'd choose Harper over Ankergren any day of any week.

Unfortunately, that moment of madness was the turning point of our season.

It may have been a different story v Palace, if we'd gone into the game beating Leeds 3-2 after being 2-0 down. The tension and nerves in the Palace game may not have been there, knowing we could come back in such style.

It was Vincelot, Sparrow and Harley in midfield. It's up to them to pick the ball up from the back and move it into forward areas.

How are they supposed to do that when Harper hoofs the ball down to the other team's penalty area?

With the correct movement. Notice how before Bridcutt came off he would come to the edge of the box to collect the ball from Harper, did you see Vincelot, Sparrow or Harley do that, no. The passing football is not all about our ability to pass, its about our ability to make the right angles to pass and recieve the ball.

Is the midfield/tippy tappy breaking down because Bridcutt hasnt had Caldy moving into the right wing-back position. Seems that since Caldy was rested or played central that Bridcutt has had his worse performances.
This is no critism of Reyes, who looks superb, bit IMO likes to be more forward so is in front of Bridcutt rather than moving into space to give him the outlet.
So Harper has tried to bypass this format. But I cant believe that the Harper and Greer would make the decision to play long ball without Gus sanctioning it.

I've not seen Harper yet, but from my position it would seem this decision to bring him in has backfired horribly. How many keepers have we got on our books? Three? How must they be feeling about a player being drafted in on a one month loan (initially) and who so far was poorly out of position against West Ham thus conceding the decisive goal, and who presided between the sticks last night for a game where we hoofed it all game leading to the shittest performance in probably two years?

I thought Gus didn't like loans. He was right. Was Ankergren ever that bad? Personally I didn't think so, but if he was much better he'd be playing for a Premiership side or one destined to be there soon. It looks like a shit decision to bring Harper in at the moment.

Before you make these judgements on Harper I suggest that you go and watch him play. You may eat your own words.
