Sorry to bounce this, but it appears we got it all wrong. Someone on the Metro website has posted a far more feasible explanation.

I think a far simpler method for this trick would be to use blank balls coated with a photosensitive material. As the numbers are drawn they could be very quickly entered into a program that controlled a laser positioned perhaps on the wall directly behind the balls. This laser could then write the numbers onto the back of the balls with time to spare. It's a bit high tech for a derren brown trick but it would be far more reliable than having to use overlay footage.

Apparently he's doing something in a few weeks where he takes a competition winner to Vegas, to a random casino and will predict a roulette wheel (Number & Colour) with 5k of the competition winners OWN money to win 175k.

Can't see that at all. If you mean it's lined up differently against the background, because of the perspective it would take only the tiniest movement of the camera to make that difference.

Likewise, when people say there is a continuity problem going into or out of the wide shot, I can't find that either. Seems to match up.

The camera can make the tiniest movements, because it is either motion controlled (to look hand held), or the shake is actually an effect applied to a stationary camera.

The shake isn't natural - it only happens on fixed planes.
