Root caught by de Kock

Philander returning after a spell off the field with a dodgy tummy got Root to nibble at one which moved off a spot a bit short of a length, and de Kock caught a splendid diving catch in his outstretched mitt.

113-3 (38.2 overs)

And they're off... again!

114-3 (39.3 overs)

Once again, looking out of the window in Sussex I'm left wondering why this country insists on holding outdoor sporting events in some godforsaken northern backwater.

Dawid Malan off the mark after a fairly torrid 15 balls... pokes one into the covers and scampers through for his 1st Test Match run :clap2:

I noticed that and edited it to read couple of hours but we do not breed batsmen to last more than an hour or so. Those days have long gone with the village green type cricket played now to earn money.

There is certainly an element of that, but not one of the England players to fall today, lost their wicket trying to score. I don't think you give SA enough credit - they are bowling extremely well.
