247 in the day is pretty slow going by modern standards, still good news for Cook to get a score. That'll give him a bit of confidence.
Platform laid for our stroke makers and biffers to get us up to 500 an hour before close. Couldn't be set up better for Butler on debut to smash the bowlers on debut.

Could be an interesting days play, I'm particularly interested in how Dhoni goes about his captaincy tomorrow. My guess he attacks early hoping the newish ball makes in roads and if England get through the first twenty overs of the day he will go right on the defensive. We saw it today with 7/2 fields with Jadeja bowling gun barrel straight.
Can see the likes of Bell & Ali using their feet and Buttler and the tail taking a more agricultural route.

Cook should have been out on 15, Jadeja spilled a routine catch. It could have huge consequences for both Cook and the series, although I still can't see England taking 20 wickets with this attack on a good batting wicket.
Cook played well after the drop, although the day belonged to Ballance. Looking rock solid against a limited attack, he cashed in and could go big tomorrow.

No idea why, as I've no great regard for Surrey, but for some reason, I always used to like watching Stewart bat. Those two hundreds in the Barbados Test match were brilliant. Must have been, what, early to mid 1990s?

Alec Stewart was one of my favourite players of yesteryear. He didn't have the best start to his test career and didn't look like he had the necessary quality but he worked extremely hard at his game and turned himself into a top quality test player.
Amazingly Hampshire seems to have avoided the biblical deluge that has struck in Sussex... and play is about to start.
Hopefully England can move the game on a bit today with a faster scoring rate, or India by taking some wickets.
