Going down Parris and Greening, New Church Road, age 11, and buying a pound (lb) bag of sulphur*, a pound of potassium nitrate, and a jar of finely ground carbon, mixing them in careful proportions, and then going over West Hove golf course (RIP) to make explosions.

Ditto potassium permanganate, which was mainly squirted at passing cars to leave a troublesome purple stain.

I f***ing loved Chemistry, me.

*Most of which I still have, in a 1970s Maxwell House jar, in my shed. What could possibly go wrong?
I had a chemistry set when still at primary school so zero knowledge of chemicals. It came complete with a bunsen burner which I connected to a gas wand on our cooker. I used to mix all sorts of powder and granules together and boil them. Once when my mum washed the shirt I had been wearing when experimenting it came out of the washing machine completely full of holes.

"Penny for the guy"
Getting (breaking) in to abandoned houses which were, WITHOUT FAIL, called the Haunted House.
Playing on building sites
Getting told off by the Parkie for some misdemeanour (usually calling the aforementioned Parkie "wanker")
That is exactly my childhood in the early 70s, when Dyke Road Park had a parkie.

Pocket money, all six pence of it, being withdrawn for the most minor of misdemeanors.

Getting smacked by a headteacher for whacking a bully.

Made to stand in a corner looking at the wall.

Having to endure Saturday evening TV on one of just three channels … with ‘creative’ offerings The Black & White Minstrel Show, The Cilla Show, The Lulu Show, The Petula Clark Show.

Sheets of school loo paper made by a sadist.

Itchy acrylic and nylon kids clothing.

…. aye and we were grateful for it :lolol: .
That Bruce Forsyth Sunday evening game show, and Rolf creepy Harris doing his giant 'guess what it is ' paintings.

Tit Cricket in the pub when girls walked past. I think the rules were;

1 run if you managed a gentle elbow glance
4 runs for a glance with the hand
6 runs for full hand on said target (was a risk as this often involved a slap, or worse if her boyfriend was out with her :)

That is terrible, would never have played that.

Collecting and spending Green Shield stamps.
Getting camera film developed into photos.
Collecting coins and stamps.
Paper rounds.
Fishing off the piers.
Dodging bus fares.
I guess fishing is still popular but do kids still do it? I used to fish a lot off the breakwaters in Newhaven. Darkie Knight for my equipment, and usually the west side breakwater for the actual fishing. Mackeral were very easy to catch in the summer.
