Books, or Mrs BN9’s books since she got a Kindle.
Mrs BN9 is a very quick reader and would take several books on a holiday, one year she also bought some more at Gatwick, her case was then too heavy and myself and sons had too load her new books in our luggage

Suitcases.

Now we don't have to ferry the kids never need anymore than we can get into hand luggage.
And always book front row seats so first off the plane bypassing luggage reclaim and away.
Always use to take a travel kettle but all hotels now have them.

My dad insisted on taking a calor gas stove (borrowed from work) on those tortuous journeys to Devon. We’d stop in a lay-by often next to a mobile drinks van and brew up.

Years later I would always take a jumper to Spain just in case we had bad weather.

I still take my own mug and slippers wherever we go.

What are these holidays you speak of? Vacation....... or Staycation shirley?

Staycation = no holiday in my book.

Holiday in UK = Holiday - Not Staycation

Phrase books, sadly most Brits abroad can't be arsed to make the effort to speak a little of the local lingo....and besides we have Google to translate for us now.

The maximum limit of taking just £50 on holiday from ? 1966 -1969. I think it used to be noted in your passport.

I loved spending hundreds and hundreds of Drachmas on beer & food.
From memory it was about 400 to the £1 so easily a couple of grand for a night out 30 years ago - made me feel rich.

Beer worked out at about 50p a bottle or cheaper from local draught.
You could easily eat out for £5 each night.
If you went on flight only, rooms were about £5 per night.
I went to Greece 2 years ago, even Raki was 4 to 6 Euros, you could get a whole bottle for £3.

Went on holiday to Portugal and my uncle came with us. He’s into his fishing and blissfully unaware he packed his gutting knife in his hand luggage. Rooting through his bag to get something else and put the knife on his tray table mid flight. Scared the shit out of his neighbour who Bing Bonged the stewardess. Subsequent fruity conversation ensued before he agreed they could take it.

It was like travelling with Crocodile ****ing Dundee!

I always pack a Swiss Army Knife everywhere I go
The siccorrs always come in handy for nail cutting.

But one trip I actually packed in hand luggage by mistake . They actually opened it up and I thought " oh shit, it's gonna get confiscated. "

Instead he closed the knife. Put it back in my bag and confiscated a half consumed bottle of Coca Cola. Explain the logic to that one for me ?
