Although he used to wind me up in the 70's and 80's (because he was so bloody good), Graham Souness said it all really last week. Yes he's been a crap manager but he hit the nail on the head with his comments about pro footballers now.

Never thought I'd say it but I yearn for players like him to return to the game, HARD as nails and would run through a brick wall for their team mates. You'd want him on your side in a war, how many pussy players can you say that about now?

Overpaid footballers deters Graeme Souness from management return - Telegraph
think the telegraph headline should read, "no fucker will give him a job because he's shit"- deters souness from management return

Good post and a good point. I dont really follow any other football beyond Brighton and a casual interest in the Bundesliga these days. I will watch the international tournaments but I cannot be bothered with England.

I've never bothered with Sky or whatever and cannot say I feel I've missed out on anything. I get fed up with the hype, but maybe also as one gets older other interests take over? I've got a number of things I get up to which all take time....time I'd rather not spend stuck on a sofa in front of the telly or down the pub with a load of goons staring at a plasma screen.

My thoughts exactly, I just said to myself why am I giving Sky money when I don't even follow a premiershite club? I can satisfy my limited interest by watching MOTD and see the Albion goals after on the FL Show they have (which is great)

When the cricket went 100% over to Sky I started to feel uneasy that millions of kids might not see the Ashes live this time and I saw the light.

I think I'm turning into an old git though as I've just started brewing my own beer with hops I've grown in my own garden this summer:whisky:

Mick Channon had the best one, it was like he was trying to crank up an old bus motor, or fly?

Look at 4:37mins in this clip
]

Great clip - good to see two future Brighton players there

City played with a forward line of Royle, Kidd and Channon - how often do teams play with three strikers from the start these days?

People going on about how sky/the premiership/-league has 'ruined football' as if it makes them a purer fan of "real football"

apparently

  • it was rubbish
  • there were nasty people there
  • every stadium was going to collapse ANY SECOND
  • everyone lost every week in front of attendances of under 200
  • it rained at every match
  • no one could kick the ball without falling over in a comedy fashion
  • no one was allowed to take man bags full of poppers and lube to the match as people might take the piss out of them and hurt their feelings
  • an average of 25000 people were murdered at every football match in England every Saturday in the 80s
  • people wore sportswear and not ironic t shirts
  • the best paid player was Kenny Dalglish on £7.50 a week
  • common people went

sexism

the lack of black managers

lack of sustainably fuelled park and ride schemes or car pooling for away matches

homophobia

lack of asian players at the top level of the game

no wireless access in stadiums

Rampant Political correctness

The lack of talented black managers

Heterophobia

Lack of intererst in the Asian sub-continent in football - and the USA come to that

Obsession of too many people with electronic media, I like my old tranny to hear games on the radio.

Football in the 2000's is a hassle and has lost allot. Whilst beggars cant be choosers after the end of the goldstone, the club will have to try and make the out of town ground at falmer user friendly. Plastic seated grounds have no soul as it is.

"Back when football was good" got the biggest laugh for me. Who are you trying to kid?

More people than you (as is evident on this thread) because it doesn't take a f***ing genius to realise football was much better in the 70's/80's!

Just 'cause Sky try to tell everyone football is at its ultimate now doesn't mean it is! It's f***ing well not!

Please don't bother with some tiresome lecture on how the quality of football is better now and how great it is to be able to watch matches on TV all the time from your high-horse as well. If that's all you're bothered about then you really don't understand what football is.

Thank goodness I've got you on your high horse to tell me how it was much better back then, and how I couldn't possibly understand. Please don't bother with some tiresome lecture.

The ACTUAL FOOTBALL is far better nowadays. THE ACTUAL FOOTBALL is all that really matters for me. Simple.

Not really. I go to football games to watch the football. Simple. Not brainwashed at all, the Sky coverage is cringeworthy, I just DON'T pay attention to it.

I'm not going to apologise for enjoying the high standard of football that we can nowadays. Boycott games (and watching on TV) if it's such an issue to you.

so if you dont pay attention to sky , where do you see this "high standard" of football that you speak of ? because if you think that league one football in 2003 is better that first division football in the seventies then you're on persians , or are you on about the cruyff turns you see down the park all the time?

When I say don't pay attention, I'm referring to their constant aggrandizing of the Premier League and the games they're showing.

Of course I watch the games, they're good games played at a good pace at a high level of football, be stupid not to if you're into football. I'm just not sucked in by the hype.
