You are joking right? Who in their right mind uses a phone number to show they are inferior!

Very American thing to do when a city gets its code split.

Used to be a bit of an even/odd thing in Dublin with "3" and "7" being seen as horribly lower class starting numbers and 2/6/8 being seen as posh., so when they extended the numbering to 7 digits, *everyone* was given even starting numbers initially.

However my town's now got 50x xxxx being issued

None of the multinationals , financial institutions or the mega rich of Kensington and Chelsea ended up with a 081 or 0181 phone number.

...to bring it in line with the rest of the country - 5 digit dialling code and then 6 digit number?

Not really as in the Lakes and other places where the population is low the dialing codes are 6 digits followed by 5. Sorry i'll get my coat
