I paid for some timber over the phone with a bank card to a local supplier, the cost was £32......

When I check my account the twats have taken £557 in a separate transaction.

Should I report it as theft? i have tried to contact them but of course they are closed until Monday..

What should I do?

Should I ask for compensation as well? if so how much?

I'd ring/visit and ask to speak to manager first, you will probably get a quicker response and money back straight away....whoever responsible may be looking for work soon!

Would be very difficult to prove a theft, as opposed to a human error.

Complain to the company, demand your refund, including suitable compensation for any other losses you have suffered as a result, ie declined payments, interest, overdraft fees and so on.

I would contact the seller and remember if an error and they reverse the transaction it will take longer for the money to actually show as a credit in your account.

If indeed the transaction was with a reputable local company, you should have no problem after you talk to them on Monday am.

If, on the other hand you were uncertain about the company, it would have been better to have paid with a credit card rather than debit card given the usual guarantees with credit cards.

Call your Bank Monday and log it as a disputed charge. They should note the transaction as such so you shouldn't have to pay interest etc until it is all sorted out. Not a very pleaseant experience. I have had similar (But only £100 or so) dodgy charges levied by car hire firm when in France. It may take a while to resolve, but you need to go though your Bank and make sure you record everything in writing in a letter, not just e-mail. Good luck.

Is it possible the customer after you might have spent the 557.00 and the trader wasn't paying attention and accidentaly put it through under your details?

I paid over the phone so I have no idea....

its a reputable local firm and I am sure it is a mistake ( what else can it be?)

So I will have to wait until Monday to see if they argue...I will report it to the bank tomorrow.

I Think the general rule with this is let them rectify it first (it could be a mistake if a reputable firm) and if the wont or dont play ball, then do everything else. Cant do any harm letting your bank know in the meantime.
