Looking forward to this, we're going in a few weeks; have also got tickets for Mark Rylance's production of Twelfth Night at the Globe in the autumn - bbbbrrrrrrrrr.........

Just arrived home from watching the Last of the Haussmans at the Lyttelton (NT). It's had good reviews but we were both really disappointed; Julie Waters was fine despite the occasional lapse into Mrs Overall mode but the play didn't come over to me as a really striking social commentary on the sixties, I thought it was a bit weak.
The Last of the Haussmans – review | Stage | The Guardian

Had a brill afternoon at the National Gallery though. We went on one of the 90min public tours; about 30 in the group and we only looked at four portraits during the tour. Learnt loads; the 16th century symbolism of Holbein and Velázquez, the technique of the latter and finding out that Rembrandt was crap at painting hands so normally brought on a sub from the bench. And it's all free.

Nice one sounds like a great day.

I'm off to see The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui at Chichester soon and can't contain my excitement (seriously) - I must be a sad sod.

You're in for a treat - it's absolutely superb. Star performance from Henry Goodman.

Henry V at the Globe is best ive seen in years and only a fiver in the yard.

I saw Mark Rylance in that ten years ago - best production I've ever been to. The man's a genius and I have locked up my tickets to his Richard III and 12th Night with Mr Fry at The Globe in a safe place. Can't wait!

I'm rather tempted by Great Expectations on tour this autumn - I hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but I do believe our very own Build a Bonfire author is treading said boards in it.

Timon of Athens at the National - best production I've seen for ages. It's not a great play but Hytner's take on it is fantastic. SRB has taken most of the plaudits but there's an excellent supporting cast too. Get tickets now because I'm sure this will be a sellout as word gets round.

With a free Saturday afternoon, thanks to the students, I was able to take in a rather different type of quality entertainment this week.

2012 is the tenth year that the musical WE WILL ROCK YOU has been on at the Dominion in Tottenham Court Road and it is still an excellent show IMO. I was particularly pleased to see the actress playing Scaramouche was the same girl who played it when I saw the show ten years ago. She has been away, according the programme, but returned to the cast. She was my favourite character back then, and was the same this time.

The script has been updated since I last saw this show, with references to things like facebook and twitter, which didn't exist in those [were the] days. Also the list of music stars who have passed away young, like Amy Winehouse, has been sadly updated.

If you enjoy the music of Queen, I would recommend this show. Don't go expecting to see a pseudo Queen gig - it ain't that. But its a good show, and with plenty of 2-for-1 deals available, you can get a front row circle ticket for the same price as a ticket to the Amex. Bargain.

Just booked up for The Judas Kiss at the Theatre Royal next month. Seeing Rupert 'Another Country' Everett in the flesh I shall probably pass out with excitement, but we'll struggle on.

Went to see 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time' at the Duke of Yorks National Theatre Live screening last week - fantastic play, all 2.5hrs plus of it, with a stupendous performance from the actor in the lead role, not that everyone on stage wasn't at the top of their game. Wish I'd gone up to The National to see it in the flesh before the end of it's current run, but tickets are rarer than a BHA Amex win these days.

I am disappointed to hear that Driving Miss Daisy is not selling well at the Theatre Royal this week.

Excellent chance of cheap POTG any night this week.

Got my folks tickets at eight pound each for today! Don Warrington, what's not to like?

Saw The Judas Kiss at the Theatre Royal last week. Rupert Everett was superb and I've never seen so much lucious, naked and sizeable cock on a theatre stage at one time before! especially that Italian bloke, ahem, I mean there were great some performances all round.

Very informative, have you thought about applying to be the Argus's theatre reviewer?

So I did POTG at the Theatre Royal last night and picked up a pair of tickets in the front row of the second circle for £25. Bargain.

That was the good news.

I'm afraid I was very disappointed with Driving Miss Daisy. The story, such as it is, centres on an old lady in the southern states initially resisting having to have a "coloured" driver, but over the years coming to be fond of him. The film is well known, which suggested this stage show might be well attended. Perhaps reviews haven't been good, and if that's the case I'm not surprised.
The pace of the production was desperate. Made worse by it running for 90 minutes with no interval. Now I know I had had a couple of jars in the afternoon, but I could barely keep my eyes open and was so relieved when we were finally let out.

Sorry but 4/10 is the best i can offer

Bit late off the mark, perhaps, but I saw Great Expectations at the Theatre Royal last month & it was really enjoyable. Can't remember the last time I went to the theatre before that, but I really need to do it more. It's on a national tour before starting a London run if you fancy it. Features Jack Ellis, Chris Ellison & our own Steve North.

Shrek theatre royal drury lane. M'eh. Seems a family oriented thing. My niece loved it, I thought it doesn't rank high on my favourites. That's not to say it was particularly bad, just not good enough to displace my favourites.

I have tickets for Quartermaine's Terms in January, with Rowan Atkinson at the Theatre Royal.

Technically this should be on the Theatre 2013 thread I know.

advice please!

Was hoping to pick up some west end tickets for my mum for christmas. She likes musicals, but i am certainly no expert in this area.

i've got a few under consideration, but just wondered what any musical aficionados thought was best of the current crop...

What sort of musicals does she like?
More operatic - Les Mis is currently a big hit again due to the upcoming film. Phantom of the opera is a classic.
More Pop/Artist specific - Mamma Mia seems like one mothers would tend to like, Thriller covers Michael Jackson, We Will Rock You covers queen, The Bodyguard is a new one with a lot of Whitney Huston and is getting good reviews I think, Viva Forever covers the spice girls though is not getting good reviews
More classic musical - I loved wicked, there's also Caberet, A Chorus Line
Older music (50s/60s) - Dreamboats and Petticoats, Jersey Boys,

The Book of Mormon has been a smash hit on broadway, and is coming to the west end in february (from the makers of south park so there will be language and crude humour)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starts in May.

Thank you Acker. Looks like I came to the right place!

I was considering Wicked, so glad to hear the good review for that. I'm sure she would enjoy Billy Elliot, but think she's been before. Phantom is definitely under consideration.
I know she used to love Blood Brothers and went to the final showing in London I believe, so maybe something along those lines.

Anyway, thanks for the rundown.

Singing in the Rain at the Palace theatre in Shaftesbury Ave - you can pick up £15 tickets for it (not the best seats admittedly, but an absolute bargain for a West End show). Friends/family who have seen it in recent weeks (different showings) all loved it.
