Sorry to jump the gun a bit with this thread title, but like we have a Film 2011 thread, I wondered whether there might be value in a theatre thread along the same lines.

I have just bought tickets to see James Corden in One Man, Two Guvnors at the Adelphi in February. Anyone else seen this yet? Its had amazing reviews

I haven't but I know people who have seen it and they say it's very, very funny.

The play is superb: I saw it at the Young Vic about ten years ago and it's farce at its best

I don't go to the theatre as often as I think I should, or would like (though mostly my preference would be for musicals), so I wouldn't contribute as much to a theatre 2012 thread, but would be interested to read it.

I go the theatre a lot (I'm a part-time theatre critic) and this is a very good time for the stage. There are some fantastic shows on right now and some theatres are making real efforts to get people through the door.

I'm doing to Richard II at the Donmar tomorrow - I can report back on that if you want.

Report back for sure. For a start what is the Donmar like?

The last play I saw was Keeler at Brighton last month. Sadly it was very poorly attended on the Tuesday night when I was there.

The Donmar is a fantastic theatre: a really intimate space that is generally well-used by the creative team. It only seats a few hundred, so shows sell out rather early.

I'm afraid that the Theatre Royal is suffering a bit. I was there for Henry V a couple of weeks ago, it was a fantastic show, yet it was barely a third-full.

There are half-price deals to be had in January and early February for a lot of big shows in London in this deal launched today...

(No weekends, but good availability for Friday evenings etc - might be an easy Christmas present etc)

I saw Hangman by Maggie Clune at the Open House Theatre, superb. plus Ten Men the Lives of John Bindon is a great evening out. The Brighon theatre company TwoBins are doing some great stuff around Brighton at moment, based in The Old Market theatre.I Don't often do big London shows and with the local talent in Brighton this past year there's tonnes of good shows locally.

I saw One Man Two Guv'nors last night. It's not high brow theatre (thank god), but it's very funny and highly recommended. I got my ticket for £16, a bargain.

Went to War Horse on £15 restricted view tickets at The National Theatre a few months back - decent view for the price.

Just bought my folks tickets for The King's Speech at the Theatre Royal next year for Christmas. Started out as a play before transferring to the big screen apparently.

The making of War Horse on More 4 this afternoon was brilliant.

I have tickets for The Kings Speech at Brighton Theatre Royal in February. Looking forward that.

We have tickets for Tim Minchin's Matilda somewhen.

Read some interesting stuff from Andrew Lloyd Webber about the impact of the Olympics on ticket sales. Apparently running at c10% of normal levels in some cases and many theatres may close whilst the games are on.

I would have guessed that the influx of people to the capital would have seen bumper crowds.

I saw Matilda last week and thought it was superb, I'd recommend it to anyone with kids, although there was plenty in it to keep the adults entertained too. The entire cast were excellent and the kids were all amazing, especially considering their ages. As for the music and lyrics by Tim minchin, not as sweary as his usual stuff (as you'd expect), but still v funny.

Overall, go and see it!

Just back from THE KING'S SPEECH at the Theatre Royal and I have to say that it was criminal to see all the empty seats. What a waste.

What a brilliant production, with superb perforances and a brilliantly simple set. Its a great story and superb performed by actors live on stage.

If you enjoyed the Oscar winning film, and you are in Brighton this week, buy tickets and go an see this show.

9/10

:clap2:

We saw it at the weekend and agree - it is a fantastic show from beginning to end.

I can think of no greater praise than saying I want to see it again.

I saw Alan Bennett's The Woman in the Van last Wednesday at Brighton Theatre Royal. I like a lot of his work and was looking forward to this play based on events in his life.

There were many quintessentially Alan Bennett lines which, when they were delivered by one of the actors playing him, were all the more effective. I was intrigued that there were two actors playing Bennett himself, and thought this was clever as one acting as him and the other narrating. That was until they started interacting with each other. Maybe its me, but I just didn't get it and it was something of a distraction from the central character The Woman herself. Excellent acting performance as she gradually went from being a bit mad to totally bonkers, and ultimately passing on some twenty years later.

It was good to see the theatre much more full than on my last visit, perhaps due to the short run, or perhaps due to the following that Alan Bennett has.

Worthwhile, whilst not extraordinary 6/10
