Following on from the 'Any popular TV series you have never watched?', thread.

Today I received the complete first series, of The Wire.
As i'm so feed up with 'the media' but predominately 5-live, telling me it's the greatest programme ever made.

If it doesn't live up to The Sopranos I'm not going to be happy.

You have to stick with the first 3 or 4 episodes, just to get a handle on what's going on.

I hope you like it as much as the rest of us.

I've never seen The Sopranos...

It's difficult to compare it to The Sopranos, totally different viewing experience. If you take it for what it is then it'll be one of the best things you've watched. Personally I prefer The Sopranos.

Over the past couple of months, I think it easily goes into double figures, the amount of times The Wire has been mentioned.
Thinking about it, it might just be Richard Bacon, but nevertheless, when it is spoken about, it's ALWAYS followed by 'greatest programme ever made'.

The Sopranos is more of a soap opera, albeit with well drawn characters.

The Wire is a supreme, but you have to concentrate at all times, and the street talk is tough to pick up on occasions.

It's lucky I come from the mean streets of a West Sussex coastal village, then.

The Wire is excellent. As others have said, give it 2-3 episodes to establish the characters, then once you "know" them, they're all just so enjoyable to watch. LOved the first series, and I'm about 2/3 of the way through the second series now. Compulsive viewing.

The street lingo can be a challenge though. Occasionally I have to rewind and reply a line of dialogue with the subtitles on just to make it out, y'all.

Seems like something better suited to DVD than weekly episodes.

Hey Easy have you listened to The Football Ramble yet?

I listened to one, and thought it was shite to be honest. Maybe I just caught a bad week, I'll give it another go.

The Danny Baker podcasts is where its at. LOVE his Saturday morning show.

IVe never watched 24 which my friends give me grief over

a few years ago me and my wife watched the first 3 episodes on DVD of the first series. We immediatley wanted to watch the next episodes and I went up to the shop to get it out....but they didn't have it.Next day didn't have it either....after a couple of days, I couldn't be arsed, lost all interest. Sure it must be good but, think a lot of it is to do with the 'what happened next' aspect of it....like soap operas. And I doubt very much that I would ever watch it again once I had seen it all like I would a good film or tv series that I really love like Peep show or something.

Deffo re Danny, I love it.
Try the Ramble with The Farnborough Air Show in the title, I do remember it being good, even before my email about Colin Hawkins.

Unfoutuanatly I only managed the first 3 epsiodes of the wire, due to being busy it tailled off so cannot comment on that and will at some point try again.

However I recommend for Stat 'the real peleton' podcast for all your cycling fixes, although I am about a month behind Giro and Landis stuff.

Agree Danny Baker is great, we even used to download his pay podcasts untill some geezer ripped him and his collegues off and ran away with all the money.

Really well written, scripted, acted. Bunk - the best detective ever. Keep with it - it's better than the Sopranos.

It is too much to ask of any programme to live up to The Sopranos but you will be satisfied with The Wire. It is one of the greats alongside The Sopranos.

I am almost at the end of the Sopranos (last 3 discs of Episode 6 - 2) and much as I have enjoyed it, it does not compare in quality or plot lines to the Wire. I have never seen another series I have enjoyed more. The last series of the Wire was a bit of a letdown but I gather they wound it up rather quickly for whatever reason.
