The Wembley experience.

So glad i got to go to Wembley in the 70's/80's last night so called full house seemed to generate an awful atmosphere paper clappers/band/empty corp seats and Mexican wave plus the amex type fire drill is enough for me never to attend a future kids party at Wembley, glad i watched it from home. They must take England around the country in the hope of better regional atmospheres ??? The lack of passion all round has killed the national team.

Atmosphere seemed good at start, went a bit quiet after 15 mins until we scored first goal, then pretty good until final whistle. 85k + not bad for International against 2nd bottom FIFA ranked team

You are missing the op's point I believe he is saying despite 90k in the stadium the atmosphere was very poor

He is right england games at wembley are now a soulless, sanitised atmosphere full of happy clappers and drum led nonsense. The old wembley used to generate a very intimidating atmosphere for the opposition and was a much better match experience as an England fan.

England games at Wembley are awful, I'll never go again until we finally host a tournament. And I only live 3 tube stops away. I might reconsider if they got rid of that terrible band.

Saying you prefer the old wembley to the new one is a bit like saying you prefer the Goldstone to the Amex. The memories might be great but the reality was dreadful. I went to the old Wembley a few times for the Albion and a few England games - it was horrible. Poor sight lines, appalling facilities, cramped seats or crushed terraces, poor transport links, non existent catering other than the ring of e-coli burger vans around the outside of the stadium. I've yet to get to the new Wembley but wouldn't want to go back to the old one - its 2012, not 1972.

It's an odd comparison as the Amex as a new stadium has generated a fantastic atmosphere something which the new wembley has miserably failed at. There is simply no comparison of facilities of the new wembley to the old but despite the state of the old stadium (which despite numerous visits I would not describe as 'dreadful') it did generate a far superior atmosphere.

Yes the burgers, transport and seats are better but the more important elements like product on the pitch and atmosphere in the stands is vastly inferior

Have a visit to the new one and I guarantee you will initially be in awe at the scale of it, the facilities and quality of finish but will leave wondering at which point wearing a foam hand became the norm at an England game

I've not been to an England game at the new Wembley (although may well do on May 29th next year), but would you not put the lack of atmosphere down to the fact that they played San Marino last night?

I may be wrong, but England haven't really played a massive game at Wembley yet have they? I.e. a game with the likes of Germany that they NEED to win, or a competitive game against Scotlant. There was that Croatia one under McLaren but I think most of you thought you'd easily get the draw and Croatia are far from glamorous opposition, even if they are quite handy.

Wait, no atmosphere from a bunch of football tourists watching England put in drab performance in a one-sided match against the (joint) worst international team in the world?

No way!!!!

It's often hard to get much of an atmosphere at big stadiums like Wembley - by the time a song's caught on half way round the ground its died where it started from. It's certainly not helped by that Olympic gallery, or whatever it's called, separating the crowd, and that big corporate area by the half way line. Best atmospheres are generally at smallish stadiums with a big home end who get the noise going, places like Stoke and Fratton Park.

I was there too last night, the "atmosphere" there is unbelievable. It makes MK Dons look like Galatasary, all you can hear is conversations going on during the entire length of the game! As for the band, well at least they get some songs going because the only time people sing is when they play (the one thing I'll say in their credit is at least they sing in time). Also there were masses and masses of people leaving from the 75th minute and any attempt at standing/getting a bit of a song going or encouragement to the team/playful berating of San Marino and their keeper is met with ill-informed abuse.

Here, there and everywhere
I can't stand the band either.

Have only been to one game at the new Wembley, and that also had piss-poor atmosphere. Apart from the away fans (Dutch) who were right next to us, it was abit like being in a library.

I do wonder whether it's down to the over-priced tickets. Certainly for evening games you get a lot of city types there in their suits, gone straight from work.
