[Albion] The Unconscious / Conscious Bias Towards the ‘’Big Clubs’

Some of the The unconscious bias is in our own heads as we seem to desperately seek plaudits from observers. I don't get it. It's a small club mentality.

Albion had their moments after that splendid equaliser, but ultimately it was a comfortable win for them.

I don't know what I'm missing, but none of the commentators annoy me. It's inevitable there will be more talk of the 'bigger' teams. We never complained about our status when 17 of promotion campaign matches were live on the box.

The analysis of our game was reasoned and pretty complimentary. Not sure what more is wanted.
There does seem to be quite a lot of chip-on-shouldery whining on here tonight. I really enjoyed the game, thought we played some excellent football, and that the post match analysis was fair. Once Souness had finished banging on about Brighton's calamitous "naivety" in the first ten minutes, he was otherwise fairly positive, not something you often get from the dour Scotsman. Carragher was tedious and predictable though. "Who's your MOM Jamie?" ...and wait for it ... "the one what scored the goals for Liverpool". It's always the ones who score the goals, isn't it? When did football stop being a team sport?

Fair enough but totally disagree. It was not comfortable at all for them from the 10th minute until the 3rd went in. We passed rings around them at times and could easily have got a deserved point with the chances we created. One of our best performances of the season and against a Liverpool team who were waaaayyy more up for it than their last few matches unfortunately.

I’m certainly not being needy - I’m not wanting them to blow smoke up our arse all the time, but there is a clear bias for me and many others it seems from the comms and the officials when playing the big teams.

Was it Van Dijks birthday today?

Exactly. And if it was Lewis Dunks birthday would we have heard about it 27 times? And would we have been reminded of who the last Albion player was to score on their birthday?! Would that research have been done. Without doubt no - so point proven for me there!

I was really angry with the commentary tonight. Our goal was superb. That moustached **** said it was a poor cross. What a ****-stain. It was a free flowing fast move where 3 kicks from our half took the ball wide at pace. The ball was whipped in to the very Center of the box where it was then guided in. It wasn’t behind or too high or weak, it resulted in a goal thereby being.... a perfect cross. Or at least a ****ing good cross. I’m ****ing cross . ****

I think there were 3 or 4 elbows / arms to the head, a very suspect tackle by Trent AA and Gomez quite possibly denying a clear goal scoring opportunity in that match.

I didn't actually hear the commentary on Gomez's fist to the neck of Trossard early on. Looked like one which should have been reviewed, but was completely ignored.

I remember Souness going on and on about Hemed's awkward landing against Newcastle. Retrospective Red card, which effectively ended his premier league career.
And yet the cynical violent challenges from the top teams never get highlighted to the same extent.

Good post. What I found grating was that when we had an attack, Carragher would always focus on Liverpools defending or perceived lack if it, especially Gomez. Sourness also needs to realise he was a shit manager and would be even shitter now.

Souness in the entire piece was full of praise for us.

His repeated only bugbear, the same as countless Albion fans moaning on NSC since last August, the suicidal passing around the back when surrounded by Liverpool players, leading to the two killer goals. Most ex player pundits and writers talk about passing around the back ... the conclusion is always the same .... mix it up, don’t make it predictable, clear your lines when you have to.

What the top sides do and get away with is the tactical foul (cynical, professional) call it what you like. If you watch that game again see how many fouls are committed breaking up a dangerous attack.

I defended Hemed on that (biased I know), but I recall many NSC’ers feeling it was an awful act and later being relieved that he was moved on as “not good enough for the PL”. A shame, he was doing more than alright for us.

I think there is always a bias towards the favourite in any game . I expect we have been guilty of it over the years when we have been favourites and lost to a team we think we should be beating. A lot of the time, we would only point out how badly we played and wouldn’t give credit to the other team, as it was a game we were “expected” to win.

Other than FAC and LC games ..... BBC etc commentators desperate for underdogs to win.

I don't think I'm over the Chelsea game last season where there ref never let us take a quick free kick, always calling them back to make sure we took the kick from half a metre to the left of where it was played from, stopping a throw-in to make us move a step down the line, while letting chelsea take all their set pieces from wherever the hell they liked.

MOTD last night after game analysis was all about Liverpool. Didn’t even mention Trossard goal.

I don't get wound up by these things, but was amused that the way that last ditch challenges were dissected.

Both sides had defenders throwing themselves successully in front of forwards to stop almost certain goals and very entertaining it was too. Liverpool's defenders showed there pedigree with quality defending and were rightly recognised. Relegation haunted Brighton's efforts were last ditch and even desperate.

We were crap against Uyd and played well against Liverpool. Though this came over when pundits talked about game. Must be remembered when for eg Liverpool and Utd on TV there are millions of there followers watching the games round the word.

I for one am shocked that a broadcaster where almost every pundit and co-commentator (bar Gary Neville) has played for Liverpool has a big pro-Liverpool bias.

Shocked.
