Thanks everybody, you have restored my faith in NSC as being a learned source of decent and knowledgeable "banter", not just a Palace-knocking shop.

Maybe I should rephrase that last bit...

I have got a dinner menu from the RMS Olympic at home: My grandad sailed on her on his way to Salonika in WW1. He was due to go to Gallipoli, but they were diverted at the last minute - bit of luck eh? As an aside he witnessed Mt Etna erupting as they sailed past Sicily. We have also a few pieces of a Zeppelin (LZ85) shot down in Salonika by HMS Agamemnon in 1916.

The Titanic sank quicker than people believe due to the loss of the double bottom, this meant water entered the vessel far quicker than originally thought and is this that flooded the later boiler rooms.

In addition, the break up was at a far lower angle than is presented due to the sheer weight created from water in the ship.

The hull was held together by metalic rivets of which due to the tempreture of the water and content of Slag in the metal became like glass and simply gave way...this has been scientifically proven. What with that, the well known smouldering fire in a boiler room.....there were a number of things that resulted in disaster and arguably needed to happen so maritime laws could change, which of course it did.

The actual event was very quick and a very violent affair of which for passengers and crew must have been horrific!

I've come back home.
Most modern cruise ships are "2 compartment ships" these days. In other words, if we flood more than 2 water tight compartments, we are f***ed, definitely sinking, no doubt. Also, the water tight compartments are able to overflow on liners & cruise ships if the pumps aren't able to deal with the rate of flooding.

(Writing this from my office here on the Norwegian Sun, where I'm Safety Officer).

We have 16 water tight compartments from deck 2 & below, but the water tight doors only stop the flooding as high as deck 2 in each compartment; if we suffer damage across more than 2 compartments, then it's time to get in the life boats and rafts.

On another point, that Vicente's a bit warm!
