The Times Online Did This Inteesting Review Of Ten Properties You Could Buy For 30k

Ten properties you could buy with your credit card
With money tight and the mortgage market shrinking fast, Times Money has put together a list of ten British properties - from flats to a four-bedroom townhouse - that would-be homeowners can buy outright for the price of a typical deposit, starting at £15,000.

1 One-bedroom flat in Tylorstown, the Rhondda Valley, South Wales: £15,000

This property in a beautifully situated, but deprived, former mining village comprises an open-plan sitting room/kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. All for the price of a mid-range car Details

2 Two-bedroom semi in Abertillery, Blaenau Gwent, South Wales: £25,000

Abertillery, another South Wales village, has weathered the collapse of coal better than Tylorstown, thanks in part to European Union money. It may also get a rail-link to Cardiff Details

3 One-bedroom flat in Rosehill, Wallsend, Tyne and Wear: £25,000

The vendor last let this property which comprises an entrance hall, sitting/dining area, bedroom and bathroom - all within 5 miles of Newcastle-upon-Tyne - for £300 per calendar month Details

4 Forester's Lodge, former meeting house, Blyton, Lincolnshire: £25,000

This odd building on the high street of a Lincolnshire village needs extensive work but has heaps of "character". Note that it is close to Blyton's acclaimed ice cream parlour Details

5 One-bedroom flat in Burntisland, Kinghorn, Fife, Scotland: £27,500

This property is in a popular seaside resort with good beaches and golf, and rail connections to Edinburgh and Dundee. It also sits conveniently - for some - between a pub and a chemist Details

6 One-bedroom flat in Rood Hill, Congleton, Cheshire: £29,950

A town-centre property in a desirable town for under £30k. There has to be a downside. And, yes, it is in need of total renovation - with access to the first floor by step-ladder. Still... Details

7 Four-bedroom mid-terrace house in Cleator Moor, Cumbria: £30,000

This four-bedroom period property (pictured, above) sits in the heart of a market town wedged between the Lake District and the Irish Sea. Predictably, extensive work is needed Details

8 Derelict cottage in half an acre in the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales: £30,000

The most scenic property on our list - but also a shell accessed only by footpath. Local attractions include superb walks, unspoilt, largely Welsh-speaking, villages and the Ffestiniog steam railway Details

9 One-bedroom flat in Bluetown, Sheerness, Kent: £30,000

Lord Nelson is said to have stayed in this very building, once the Royal Fountain Hotel. True or false, the seaside town is crammed with maritime history and counts Dickens among former residents Details

10 Two-bedroom mid-terrace house in Burnley, Lancashire: £30,000

This house needs "modernisation", but is close to Burnley's town centre. A 45-minute rail-link from the town to Manchester is under discussion - buses already do the route in an hour Details

bEAUTIFUL PLACE.

I wonder if it has problems with the river?

Looks like a great place to rent out to walkers.

A Closer look, makes me think, you be better knocking it down. Then building a flood resistant base. Developing a patio/ open structured building river side and then developing a larger modern building using local materials.

But bearing in mind it is in a National Park, there may be restrictions.

Shall we set up an NSC property consortium and BUY it? Even that's got to be more reliable than any other form of investment at the moment.

Lovely, but in the glow of the old Nuclear Power Station!

Would save on the lighting I guess!

thats nice. shames theres no jobs where those house are. most are in the sort of places where the typical times reader, or just about anyone else for that matter, would fear to tread. some might be nice, but they are cheap for a reason.

having said that, it does demostrate that there is not really a housing shortage, just a shortage in the South East. get companies to move out to these places or adopt teleworking etc and it might change.

My thoughts, entirely. It's got half an acre to play with, so you could shift it in-land a little bit. Planninng applications need to go through the NP, so I think there would be probs, yeah, but if you got them you could build a fab eco-home, self-sufficient. Amazing. Only other problem would be access - you can only get to it via a footpath through neighbour's land. Gotta hope he doesn't mind heavy machinery gouging up his land :lolol:

I bet that sells quickly now it's been in the Times - me and Mrs ELS are salivating. Could buy it with the proceeds from our house sale

Marvellous, can't understand why it's still on the market. No gas, no electricity, no roof, no drive and access via footpath over neighbours property. Doesn't say how long the footpath is and whether you can get a large wheelbarrow along it to carry all those tools and materials for the renovation. Is there a flood risk from the picturesque river?

I doubt Sarah Beeny would touch it with a barge pole.

You are basically buying an half of acre of land with some rubble.

Nevertheless as a future investment it could be good, walkers would love the place so would the painters, creative types and the groups that get away from it all at xmas and new year.

I'd imagine the NP have already recived a few enquiries, so a quick call to them could assist how viable an eco house would be.

Derelecition doesn't help anyone!

Also a call to the estate agents may open a wealth of similar but better investments. I'd imagine Agents across the UK have been asked to come up with their cheapest properties. But there could a dream property in this area for only a relative bit more.

Good luck.

I like the idea of NSC investments I imagine between us, we have all the skills to develop, manage properties and also get the investment cash.

Sadly, I'm not really being serious, LC. Knowing my luck, the land would be contaminated with some deadly type of sheep dip and I'd snuff it before getting back to the car
