Murdoch officially backs the winning side.

As a committed Murdoch-loather, I was stunned by this, perhaps he's mellowing as he approaches his tenth decade or Jerry might even be sprinkling stardust in his direction.
But this is utterly unexpected. Not so sure about your view on the winning side; it's The Sun which likes to be on the winning side, and has been in GEs ever since its 'It was The Sun wot won it' response.
Either way now, Murdoch fans can claim he's won, his haters that he's lost.

Perhaps he's worried his business will go down the drain if we remain, could sink without trace. A lot of businesses have been running hot and cold whilst this referendum has been going on, the sooner we get that shower in the EU out the better, they are a complete waste.

Murdoch's ownership of both papers is really the only common ground between The Sun and The Times. In terms of the demographic profile of their respective readerships, the 2 newspapers are poles apart.

More than anything though, it is a business decision based upon their respective competitors. Although the circulation war is no longer of huge relevance compared to the 1980s, The Sun's main rival is The Mirror which one would assume is backing Remain. Given the readership of The Sun and the Mirror's position, it was always going to back Brexit.

But it is different for The Times because its main competitor among the broadsheets has always traditionally been the Telegraph. The Telegraph is a staunchly right wing newspaper and as such it is going to be strongly on the side of Brexit. The Times is a Conservative newspaper but is more along the lines of a modern, One Nation Conservative publication and so less harsh in tone. It wants to set itself up as distinct from the Telegraph and so consequently they have gone with the opposite viewpoint to them.

It's not as surprising as it might first appear.
